North Central rolls past Eagles in playoff opener

POWERS — It was business as usual for the top-ranked North Central Jets here Friday night as they rolled past the Stephenson Eagles 54-6 in eight-player Division 2 regional football playoff opener.

The Jets (10-0), who ran their state-record winning streak to 33 games, host Lake Linden-Hubbell in a regional final this weekend. The Lakes (7-3) advanced by posting a 36-12 victory at Forest Park Friday.

Stephenson finished 6-4.

“They came out hard, but this group of kids adapts well and understands the game of football,” said Jets’ coach Leo Gorzinski. “It’s still the playoffs, though. You’ve got to be prepared for everything. Between the competitive spirit and football knowledge, we make it tough for other teams to match up with us. We cover a lot of ground.”

The Jets needed just 12 seconds to get on the board as senior quarterback Luke Gorzinski tossed an 85-yard swing pass to Elijah Gorzinski for a 7-0 lead.

Luke Gorzinski scored on a 66-yard run just two minutes, 38 seconds later, then added a five-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Lane Gorzinski for a 21-0 cushion with 3:45 remaining in the first quarter.

The senior QB then gave the Jets a 28-0 advantage on a 67-yard dash with 30 seconds left in the opening frame.

In the second stanza, Luke Gorzinski added TD aerials of 55 yards along the left sideline to Lane Gorzinski and 32 yards to Elijah Gorzinski. Lane then made it 48-0 on a 17-yard run off right tackle.

Elijah Gorzinski added a 45-yard TD dash off right tackle in the third frame.

The Eagles scored their TD on a 22-yard run off right tackle by junior Ethan Anderson in the fourth after a Jets’ drive stalled on their seven.

“Ethan’s not 100 percent right now, but he’s shifty and fast,” said Stephenson coach Logan Carlson. “He gives it his all. We had a few opportunities, although they adjusted well. They have four extra games every year. They’re a very experienced and explosive team. Making that stop was huge, especially with the way the game was, and getting that last score showed our guys weren’t going to give up.”

The Jets finished with 549 yards in total offense, including 354 on the ground. Luke Gorzinski ran four times for 163 and two TDs and completed 9-of-18 passes for 195 yards and four TDs. Two of his passes went to Elijah Gorzinski for 87 and Lane Gorzinski had three receptions for 75.

“We’ve been fortunate,” said coach Gorzinski. “We just want to enjoy every minute. Although, our job is not done. We’re not letting our foot off the gas.”

Jets’ junior Adrian Mercier hit all six of his extra points, running his season total to 47.

The Eagles were limited to 87 yards in total offense with the bulk of that coming against the Jets’ reserves during their final possession.

Starting at $3.50/week.
