Norse wins over Finlandia
ESCANABA — The Bay College Norse were looking to build some momentum for the post-season here Tuesday night.
It appears they may have accomplished that in a 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-18) non-conference volleyball triumph over Finlandia University in their regular-season finale.
The Norse are idle until Nov. 3 when they enter the Division 2 regional tournament at St. Clair County Community College in Port Huron.
“Getting a win going into the tournament is huge,” said Norse coach Dan Porath. “The girls played disciplined volleyball. We talked about team discipline and blocking at the net. They lost their six-foot middle hitter and knew we had the advantage.”
The victory enabled the Norse (11-15) to even their season series with the Lions (2-19), who defeated them 3-1 in Hancock Sept. 29.
Finlandia was within 16-14 following back-to-back kills by sophomore setter Anna Navarro in the third set.
Bay took a 20-16 lead on a block by freshman Leah Allan before the Lions got a sideout, trimming their deficit to three points.
“We were a little stressed out when they got within two points,” said Kylee Tadisch, a freshman middle hitter from Coleman, Wis. “We’re very happy with the way it ended. So many people had been here for our matches. We really appreciate their support. We really wanted to end our regular season with a win. We can go far in the tournaments if we take it seriously. This has definitely been a positive experience. I’ve enjoyed traveling with our team.”
The Norse trailed 9-7 in the finale before getting a sideout.
Allan then served for seven straight points, helping Bay surge to a 15-9 advantage.
Finlandia was within 8-6 after a block by freshman middle hitter Brooke Hgen in the second set.
Freshman setter Amber Caylor then provided the Norse with a six-point service run, helping them gain an insurmountable 15-6 advantage.
“Amber and Leah had real nice service runs for us,” said Porath. “Leah does little bit of everything for us and Kylee played a real nice match.”
Finlandia gained a 12-7 lead on a Norse passing error in the opener.
Bay began to chip away at its deficit and gained a 15-14 lead on a block by Tadisch.
A Norse hitting error enabling the Lions to tie the score.
The Norse then gained a 22-15 cushion on a kill by Allan before closing the opener on a block by freshman Riley Johnson.
Johnson finished with eight kills. Tadisch and Taylor added seven each. Allan and Rutter had five apiece. Caylor collected 27 assists to go with eight digs.
“Finlandia was definitely a beatable team, although they were tough up there,” said Tadisch. “Unfortunately for them, they were missing two middle hitters which definitely made a difference.”
Allan led the Norse on defense with 17 digs. Freshman libero/defensive specialist Tori Jandt had 10 and Bark River-Harris graduate Graci Varoni had seven.
