Former Esky, Packers coach Gustafson dies
GREEN BAY – Burt Gustafson, a one-time Green Bay Packers assistant coach, died Oct. 22 in Crystal Falls. He was 96.
Gustafson, a native of Marquette, he was the first athlete to earn 12 varsity letters at Northern Michigan University. A 1950 NMU grad, he coached high school football for six years – including at Escanaba High School – and then joined Lloyd Eaton on the NMU staff and later moved with him to the University of Wyoming.
Gustafson coached a variety of positions with the Packers from 1971-89, arriving as a linebacker coach. He also coached special teams and was assistant director of pro scouting. With the Packers, he worked for Dan Devine, Bart Starr, Forest Gregg and Lindy Infante.
Gustafson was selected to the Upper Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame in 1979
