KINGSFORD -- In a preview of a potential Division 2 District 33 final, Escanaba knocked off Kingsford 25-18, 25-17, 21-25, 25-18 in a Great Northern Conference match on Tuesday at Kingsford High School.
"We are getting closer," Kingsford coach Jaclynn Kreider said. "I enjoy competitive matches like tonight even though the outcome did not fall in our favor. We had some really good plays and stretches, but unfortunately we weren't able to stay consistent. We allowed our errors at times to give them runs that they should not have had."
The Flivvers, who lost just their second dual match of the season, recorded 33 kills in the match. Maddie Kreider led the way with nine, followed by Kailey Sundquist with seven and Elaina Bortolini and Lexi DalSanto with four each.
Kreider also paced Kingsford in assists with 18 and aces with five. Ellery Nash posted a team-high 22 digs, while Jenna Viau contributed 13.
Laura Bracket notched two blocks and Bortolini added one. Allysa Larson played well as well, finishing with 11 assists, eight digs and two aces.
"We know we have gotten better and yet still can do better,' Coach Kreider said. "We will work hard these next two weeks and be ready for them in districts."
The Flivvers, who will host the district, get a first-round bye before facing Negaunee in a semifinal on Nov. 2. Escanaba meets rival Gladstone in the first round on Monday, Oct. 31, with the winner matching up against Houghton on Wednesday, Nov. 2. The final is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 3.
