ESCANABA -- Going through an entire tennis season without a loss is a major challenge for any player.
Escanaba junior Sophia Derkos accomplished that and was rewarded for her efforts in voting during the annual meeting of the Upper Peninsula girls' tennis coaches Wednesday.
Derkos, who also didn't lose a set all year at No. 1 singles, was selected the U.P. Division 1 Player of the Year and earned all-state honors.
Gladstone's Ryan Barron gained Coach of the Year honors.
Braves' sophomore and No. 2 singles champion Tia Schone also earned All-U.P. honors.
Additional All-U.P. picks in singles were Westwood's Lexi Olson and Marquette's Maia Miller.
Esky senior Delaney Mcintyre and junior Natalie Williams also gained all-state and All-U.P. honors after taking the No. 1 doubles crown in the U.P. Finals at Kingsford.
Also receiving All-U.P. recognition in doubles were Gladstone's Maggie Buckley and Montgomery Pepin, Negaunee's Sage Juntti/Olivia Lunseth and Stella Harris/Madison Frustaglio, Westwood's Izzie Marta/Alyssa Couveau and Marquette's Payton Bullock/Payton Pleaugh.
Those receiving honorable mention in singles include Esky's Sonya Maki, Gladstone's Addie Trombley, Negaunee's Jordan Enright and Aubrey Johnson and Marquette's Annabella Marinson.
Honorable mention recipients in doubles were Esky's Leslie Purcell/Sam Manninen and Negaunee's Kallen Schultz/Madalynn Peters.
