Broncos move closer to playoffs
WEST ISHPEMING — The Bark River-Harris Broncos moved a step closer to a possible playoff berth, posting a 34-6 football victory over the Westwood Patriots here Friday night.
Westwood senior running back Jerzee Karki scored on a 60-yard run in the game’s opening play.
The Broncos, however, forced a pair of turnovers in the second quarter.
“They were driving in second, then we recovered a fumble,” said BR-H coach Al Stenberg. “We also recovered an onside kick. We made an adjustment after giving up the touchdown and were very solid the rest of the night. We’ve gotten better in the last couple weeks. I think we’re going to be in the playoffs.”
Vincent Martin led the Broncos (6-2) by rushing for 180 yards and two TDs on 22 carries. Luke Shiverski added 55 in 10 attempts and Joe Javurek caught TD passes of 27 and 28 yards.
“Ethan Ives is really throwing the ball well in the midst of his junior year,” said Stenberg. “We threw only four passes, but it was affective when we did. Vincent is really running the ball well. He has been averaging about 150 yards a game.”
Corbin LaFave was BR-H’s defensive leader with 11 tackles, including two for losses.
The Broncos host Ishpeming in their regular-season finale Thursday.
“I think it will be a good game,” said Stenberg. “They’ve been improving throughout the year. It should be an entertaining game.”
