Braves fall to Marquette in volleyball

GLADSTONE — The Gladstone Braves fell victim to Marquette’s service runs in a 3-0 (25-5, 25-10, 25-10) volleyball loss to the Redettes on Parents’ Night here Monday.

Marquette hit runs of five points or more on five occasions in this Great Northern Conference match, including a 14-point run by junior Laura Barsch in the second set.

“That was fun,” Marquette’s Ann Crandell-Williams said after her 100th coaching victory. “This is a great feeling. Our seniors were freshmen when we all started. It has been fun to do this all together.”

Gladstone led 8-4 after the Redettes committed a hitting error.

The Redettes then got a sideout on a Braves’ hitting miscue, setting the stage for Barsch’s run.

A service ace during that run gave Marquette a 13-8 lead and a series of miscues by the Braves enabled the Redettes to extend their lead to 19-8.

Gladstone finally got a sideout on a four-hit violation, but was unable to get any closer.

“We got stuck in a part of their rotation where they had good servers,” said Braves’ coach Averi Hinman. “Despite the score, I think our third set was our best tonight. We worked on our passing. We made some mistakes, but I’d rather see the girls do that than to give up freeballs.”

Gladstone started the second set with a block by senior Jenna Potes and extended its lead to 6-1 on a passing error before the Redettes started their comeback.

The Braves were within 7-5 following a defensive miscue by the Redettes in the third set.

A five-point run by senior outside hitter Hailey Ridolphi and a kill by junior outside hitter Olivia Mackie helped the Redettes extend their lead to 13-5.

“Hailey was on top of her game,” said Crandell-Williams. “We’ve been playing better in the second half of the season. We served extremely well and hit the ball well.”

Gladstone was within 15-9 before Marquette got a sideout on a kill by Gooch.

Senior Carter Granger added a five-point run, including three straight aces, helping Marquette gain an insurmountable 21-9 advantage.

Gladstone was within 4-2 after a Marquette service error in the opener.

The Redettes then got a sideout and a nine-point run by Gooch helped them extend their lead to 14-2 before a hitting miscue ended that run.

After the Braves moved within 14-5 on a hitting miscue, Granger added a 10-point run before ending the opener with a kill.

The Braves ended their regular season by hosting Negaunee on Senior Night Tuesday. Marquette hosted Escanaba Tuesday.

Starting at $3.50/week.
