HARRIS — The Bark River-Harris Broncos rediscovered their offense in the third set here Tuesday night in a 3-1 (25-16, 20-25, 25-17, 25-15) volleyball triumph over the Carney-Nadeau Wolves.

After splitting the first two sets, the Broncos gained a 6-1 lead on a Wolves’ hitting error in the third.

The Wolves were within 11-9 after a defensive miscue by the Broncos.

BR-H surged to a 21-13 advantage on a service ace by sophomore Hope Varoni.

C-N trimmed its deficit to 21-17 on a BR-H hitting error.

The Broncos then scored the last four points, closing that set on an ace by junior Braelyn Derouin.

“We definitely came out flat in the second set,” said BR-H coach Jen Ives. “We weren’t playing any offense.

“My challenge to them was to play some offense in the third set. Game 3 was a little better and saw it open up in Game 4.”

BR-H, fueled by senior Carley Varoni’s seven-point service run, grabbed an 8-2 lead in the fourth.

The Broncos maintained their advantage, which reached 14-5 on back-to-back aces by senior libero Kassidy LaBay.

C-N trimmed its deficit to seven points on back-to-back miscues by the Broncos.

BR-H, however, didn’t allow the Wolves to get any closer.

“The kids played hard tonight,” said C-N coach Steve Kedsch. “We have a real young team, and I think we did a lot of growing tonight. Elodie Lenca played well offensively and defensively, and Sam (Kedsch) did a good job on offense. She made some smart choices. She had a very solid performance.”

A six-point run by sophomore Hope Varoni helped the Broncos take the opener.

The Wolves, behind a six-point run by Sam Kedsch, built a 10-2 advantage in the second.

Three consecutive aces by Carley Varoni enabled BR-H to close within 12-10.

C-N, however, extended its lead to 17-10 on a BR-H passing miscue.

The Broncos drew within 24-20 on a defensive error before a block by Sam Kedsch sealed that set.

“We struggled a little with our serve receives,” said Ives. “We’re still trying to figure out our positioning. We tried a lot of girls at different positions. Our team is very versatile. We can put these girls anywhere. We have a lot of new girls, but they’re ready. I think we have some depth.”

Carley Varoni led BR-H on offense with six aces, 16 kills, three blocks and 10 assists. Hope Varoni added 10 aces and 23 assists, and senior Kaylee Red Bear tallied eight kills and seven blocks.

“Kaylee had a great night at the net,” said Ives. “Ella Boney made some key kills when the match needed to turn, and Mackenzie Hoffmeyer stepped up to help be a vocal leader on defense.”

Sam Kedsch collected 16 assists and 10 digs. Sophomore Mariska Laurila collected seven kills, two blocks and nine digs. Senior Marissa Thompson also had nine digs.

“Bark River-Harris has a very good team, but I thought we did a real good job playing with them at times,” said coach Kedsch. “We gave them too many aces. We have to improve on serve receives. We threw some young girls in there tonight, hoping see them grow for the future. The girls never seem to get too down. They keep fighting, and as coaches, we can’t ask for more than that.”

The Wolves visit Mid Peninsula tonight. The Broncos travel to Munising Tuesday.
