Braves XC takes second
MUNISING — Prior to the Munising El Harger Memorial Invitational cross country meet, the general consensus was Tuesday wouldn’t be a day for running personal best times.
Maybe somebody forgot to remind the high school runners on a chilly, windy and rainy afternoon hardly fit for man or beast.
Mind over matter.
Many ran personal best times, including Marquette senior Carson Vanderschaaf, who won the 3.1-mile race in 16 minutes, 10.9 seconds on the Pictured Rocks Golf Course.
“It ended up being a pretty good day despite the wind and rain,” he said. “I think this is one of the fastest courses in the U.P. You can gain a lot of momentum coming into the hills right before the finish.”
Marquette, placing six in the top seven, won with 19 points. Runner-up Gladstone scored 82, followed by Negaunee 105 and Escanaba 115.
The Marquette girls also won with 26 points, followed by Munising 56 and Negaunee 82.
Gladstone senior Drew Hughes was boys’ runner-up in a season-best 16:43.9, and Marquette senior Colin Vanderschaaf was third (16:50.1).
“I’m happy with that,” said Hughes. “I felt real good today. My time is steadily coming down. Our whole team did really well. All of us good personal or season bests. My goal was to get into the 16:40s, and I did that.”
Marquette senior Cullen Papin placed fourth (17:10.4), followed by senior teammate Brady Ketzenberger (17:10.5).
Senior Judge Anderson was Negaunee’s leader in eighth (17:28.9).
“I can’t believe how many PRs our kids ran today,” said Negaunee coach Vickie Paupore. “This is the first time Judge ran under 18. Both teams ran real well, especially for in these conditions.”
Gladstone junior Tanner Howes placed 10th in a personal-best 17:43.4, followed by sophomore teammate Aaron Hughes (17:54).
“Tanner got under 18 for the first time,” said Braves coach Gary Whitmer. “The guys went out hard. I’m proud of them. All of them had season-bests today. There’s nothing wrong with being runner-up. They did well.”
Senior James Dank was Manistique’s pacesetter in 13th (18:29.8), followed by classmate Grant Mason (18:40.8) and sophomore Ben Gilroy (18:43.5).
“All our guys PR’d,” said Manistique coach Rebekah Gilroy. “We weren’t expecting that. They ran a phenomenal race. Many of our guys had PRs by 30-40 seconds. Those were impressive times for today.”
Senior Dan Smith was Esky’s leader in 19th (18:57.3), followed by Holy Name sophomore Joe Carlson in a personal-best 18:58.7.
Ishpeming junior Lola Korpi was crowned girls’ champion in a season-best 20:03.9.
“I was hoping to get under 20,” she said. “With the wind, it was pretty hard. When I got into the open areas, I could feel myself starting to slow down. The wind was the biggest factor.”
Negaunee junior Endla Harris was runner-up in a season-best 20:45.3, followed by Marquette sophomore Monet Argeropoulos (20:47.3), freshman Ella Fure (20:51.8) and Munising senior Monique Brisson (20:56.5).
“I thought the conditions were good,” said Harris. “The wind was the only concern. I think the finish on this course is actually not too bad. I just tried to stride it out on the uphills. When you can see the finish, you know you’re about to be done. I like this course. I’m going to miss it.”
Sophomore Tessa Bruns placed sixth (21:14.5) for Marquette.
“Our whole squad did well,” said Marquette girls’ coach Paige DuBois. “Our boys varsity runners came through the first mile in five minutes, and the girls ran well. We’re very proud of how the kids performed. They’re starting to trust in their training.”
Esky sophomore Alisha Mabie took 10th (22:11.1), and junior Annabelle Neumeier was 11th (22:13.4).
“Alisha had a PR by 1 1/2 minutes, and Annabelle had a lifetime PR,” said Esky coach Scott Dykema. “We had only four girls here today because three were sick. The kids ran their best times. We have five boys finish under 20 minutes. That just blew me away.”
Gladstone’s leader was junior Kayla Farnes in 18th (23:20.3).
