Esky sweeps Flivvers
KINGSFORD — It was a clean sweep for the Escanaba girls tennis team at Kingsford Tuesday, 8-0.
“Today, we were in Kingsford, and the weather was perfect again,” Esky coach Chris Ogren said. “We were able to win all eight matches today, with several of them being very close.”
The only match to go to three sets was No. 3 doubles, where Esky’s Isy Braun and Sophie Wagner faced off against Aubrey Phillips and Audrey Veale (6-1, 6-7(1), 6-4).
“We … had a gutsy performance at No. 3 doubles today from Isy Brain and Sophie Wagner,” Ogren said. “After splitting the first two sets, the pair was able to bounce back and take the third set. Isy’s serve was really playing well, and Sophie was placing her shots in the right spots all day. When these two are both on, they’re tough to beat!”
Another close match was at No. 2 doubles where the duo of Leslie Purcell and Sam Manninen earned the second and final set against Kingsford’s Addie Rutter and Linnea Grubb in a tiebreak (6-3, 7-6(5)).
“Leslie Purcell and Sam Manninen showed their ability to win important points today,” Ogren said. “After winning the first set fairly easily, they had much stiffer competition in the second set. They were able to pull out a really nice win in the tiebreak of the second set to avoid going to a third set. Leslie was playing the net solid as well as I have seen her play it over the past three years today. Sam also had a solid day. She was running down balls all over and had a lot of really nice ground strokes that kept the pair in a lot of points.”
