Gladstone, Esky win in pool play
GLADSTONE — The Escanaba and Gladstone Minor Little League All-Stars (age 8-10) remained undefeated in the state softball tournament by posting victories here Sunday.
Esky hung on for a 4-3 victory over Hudsonville, and Gladstone needed just three innings to dispatch Edwardsburg 16-1 in the final round of pool play.
“We knew it would be a battle and everyone contributed,” said Esky manager Brian Parlato. “I’m just a cheerleader in the dugout. It’s all up to the girls. They deserve all the credit.”
Esky faces Kalamazoo West Portage this morning at 9 and Gladstone hosts Rogers City at 11:30 at the high school diamonds.
Kinsley Williams’ double to leftfield gave Esky a 3-2 lead and Gabby Parlato’s single to right made it 4-2 in the sixth.
Allie Vandermeulen brought Hudsonville within 4-3 on a throwing error and Brinley Vandstateuen was thrown out while trying to tie the contest on what appeared would be a fielding miscue.
First-baseman Ava Jackson, however, recovered in time to make the throw to catcher Koeller Hayes for the second out of the inning.
“Ava bobbled the ball at first, then made a good throw to home, and Koeller put on a great tag,” said manager Parlato. “That was a huge play.”
Braelyn Grandchamp preserved the victory by retiring the final hitter on a ground out.
“Braelyn pitched a great game,” said manager Parlato. “Their pitcher was also real good, but we got some timely hitting.”
Lucy Baker got Hudsonville on the board first on an error in the opening frame.
Williams tied the score in the second on Gabby Parlato’s ground out to second in the second inning.
Esky then took a 2-1 lead on Taylor Williams’ infield single in the fourth before Vanstateuen’s single to right tied the score in Hudsonville’s half of the inning.
“We have a great group of kids,” said Hudsonville manager Rachel Vanstrien. “We had some momentum when it was 2-2, but they really responded in the sixth. We made a couple errors, and they capitalized. Our pitcher (Nora Racey) has been absolutely fantastic. She pitched most of the games to get us here.”
Grandchamp struck out four, walked one and scattered five hits in a complete-game effort. Racey took the loss despite 10 strikeouts. She walked none and allowed seven hits.
Kinsley Williams went 3-for-3, and Taylor Williams added two hits for Esky. Izzy Willmore had a pair of Hudsonville.
Gladstone’s Addy Sanville tossed a no-hitter, fanned nine and walked two against Edwardsburg.
Baylee Larson finished 3-for-3. Reagan Carter also collected three hits, and Sanville had two.
Gladstone scored twice in the first, then sent 15 hitters to the plate while scoring 10 times in the second.
“Pitching always matters,” said Gladstone manager Joe Larson. “We have two girls we can put out there and throw strikes. We’ve been getting timely hits. We have a lot of girls who can come through for us. No matter who we play next, we know they’re going to be able to hit the ball.”
Esky and Gladstone needed just four innings apiece to post victories Saturday.
Grandchamp collected three hits, and Addisyn McDonough had two in Esky’s 14-1 conquest of Taylor North. Addyson Stropich and Ava Ryno drove in two runs each.
Sanville also threw a no-hitter in Gladstone’s 14-0 rout of Blissfield. She fanned 10, and Brynlee Larson clubbed a three-run homer.
Reese Lovell added a two-run single, and Kamryn Ayotte drove in a pair in the first.
Marquette was limited to two hits in a 9-0 loss to Croswell-Lexington, and Norway fell to Rogers City 25-4 Saturday.
