Esky Cubs go 2-2 on weekend trip

GAYLORD and SAULT STE. MARIE — The Escanaba Cubs split 2-2 over the weekend, topping Gaylord 6-4 Friday and Charlevoix 11-8 Saturday before falling to Gaylord 9-4 and Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario 7-2 Sunday.

The Cubs only had nine players for the trip and lost pitcher Hunter Lancour to injury Saturday. Escanaba borrowed Menominee’s — who accompanied the Cubs on the same bus for the trip — Spencer Coldren for the remainder.

Escanaba competed neck-and-neck with Gaylord in Friday’s opener, falling behind by one run twice before sealing the game with a three-run sixth inning.

Escanaba jumped ahead early in Saturday’s opener against Charlevoix, scoring five in the first inning and four in the fourth to lead 9-3 entering the fifth.

The Cubs held on against five more runs from Charlevoix with two more of their own in the fifth.

Facing Gaylord again for its second Saturday game, the Cubs fell behind but evened it up in the fourth 4-4. However, a big, five-run fifth from Gaylord put the victory beyond the Cubs’ reach.

The Cubs finished off their trip with a single game in Sault Ste. Marie.

Escanaba fell behind early as the Sault scored four in the bottom of the first and continued to run up the score as the Cubs’ offense had trouble igniting.

Across the weekend, Jack McEvers collected four hits and four RBIs, Trent Turchin finished with three hits and four RBIs, Bon LaChance notched seven hits and three RBIs, Jarret Olsen earned one hit and three RBIs and Nick Chiu ended with three hits and two RBIs.

Lancour spent six and two-thirds innings total on the mound, allowing nine hits, five runs (one earned) and two walks while striking out seven. Chase Cloutier gave up four hits, nine runs (none earned) and seven walks while fanning four over five innings, and LaChance allowed four hits, three runs and five walks across four and one-third innings. LaChance struck out four. Ben Johnson manned the mound for four innings, giving up six hits, seven runs (four earned) and three walks while striking out two.

Escanaba travels to Gladstone Tuesday.
