Cubs win two to advance

TRENTON — The Escanaba Cubs pulled out two wins Friday to advance to the final three in the Legion baseball state tournament today.

The Cubs rallied past rival Gladstone 14-12 in their second game of the day after defeating Clinton Township 6-3.

After the Indians jumped ahead 5-0 in the top of the second thanks to the efforts of Casey Alworden, Nick Martin and Cam Kelly, the Cubs kicked off a waterfall of 10 runs in the bottom of the fifth and held on against six more combined Indians’ runs in the sixth and seventh to take the win.

The Cubs’ Jack McEvers finished with three RBIs and one hit, and Ben Johnson, M Kaven and Nick Chiu collected two RBIs apiece.

Johnson pitched four and two-thirds, allowing three hits, seven runs (five earned) and nine walks while striking out three.

Eli Gardner pitched two innings in relief while striking out one and allowing six hits and five runs (two earned).

The Indians John Soderman finished with five RBIs and one hit, and Martin and Kelly each notched two RBIs.

Aedan Creten pitched the entirety, allowing 13 hits, 14 runs (seven earned) and seven walks while striking out three.

In the early game against Clinton, the Cubs jumped ahead 6-0 after the first two innings and held on to stay alive.
