WELLS — Bay College’s bats were much hotter than the weather here Sunday in a 21-0 rout of Gogebic Community College in the second game of a softball doubleheader.

The Norse also won the opener 10-0. Both were decided in five innings.

Bay (27-15) collected 18 of their 26 hits in the nightcap, including two home runs in the opener and four in the second game on this cloudy and chilly afternoon.

“Our girls work a lot on technique, and they’re trying to drive the ball,” said Bay coach Ross Rahoi. “All four of our pitchers threw real well. It was a cold day, but a good day for us.”

Lexi Kacalo’s two-run homer to center field gave the Norse a six-run cushion in the opening frame of Game 2, and Natalie Belanger’s three-run shot to center made it 9-0 in the second.

Ellie Miller added a leadoff homer to left to make it 11-0 in the fourth.

Belanger finished with three hits and five RBIs, including two home runs. She also belted a two-run shot to right in the fourth.

Alexis Berg had two hits and drove in three runs. Wynn, Miller and Rachael Winkel had two hits and two RBIs apiece and Avery Sorochan had a pair of hits.

Winkel, Brooke Gagnon and Jamison Ness combined on a two-hitter. They struck out nine and walked two.

Bay took a 1-0 lead on a single to center by Allison Podhaniuk in the second inning of the opener.

Kacalo ripped a grand slam homer to left in the fourth for a six-run advantage, and Sorochan’s double to right made it 7-0.

The contest ended on a three-run shot by Kacalo in the seventh.

Bay had eight hits, including two each by Sorochan and Kacalo, who finished with seven RBIs.

“Our pitching and defense were pretty good until they got a couple home runs,” said Gogebic assistant coach Kassi Huotari. “They have strong pitchers, but we didn’t connect as well as we usually do.”

The Samsons were also limited to two hits in the opener off Karlie Patron and Winkel.

Madeline Vaughn provided the Samsons with a leadoff double to center in the first inning of the nightcap, but they were unable to capitalize.

“That was a nice hit,” said Rahoi. “Their leadoff hitter definitely has a good swing. They’ve come a long way over the past couple years.”

Brooke Ofstad took the loss in the opener, and Madison Huotari became the losing pitcher in the nightcap.

The Samsons return to the Wells Sports Complex Tuesday to face Dakota County (Minn.) Technical College at noon in a sub-regional opener.

The Norse play the winner at 2 p.m.

Three more games take place Wednesday, with two of the three teams advancing to the Region 13 tournament.
