MARQUETTE -- Area girls' track teams may not have been in the running for Division 1 regional championship here Thursday.
That, however, didn't stop some from being individual contenders on this cloudy and chilly day at William A. Hart Stadium.
Esky senior Ciara Ostrenga won three events, and Gladstone senior Emily Siebert had a break-out performance in pole vault.
Marquette edged Sault Ste. Marie 64-59 for the title. Esky placed third with 42 points.
The Marquette boys ran away with this one by scoring 92 points. Runner-up Gladstone had 31.
Siebert set a school record by soaring 10 feet, one inch, more than a foot higher than her previous best (9-0).
"I think the adrenalin may have been the biggest thing that got me going," she said. "When I got to 9-6, I know I had a PR (personal record). I had a good week of practice. I'm very excited and going to keep trying my very best. This is going to give me a lot of confidence going into the GNC meet and U.P. Finals."
Ostrenga came from behind to win the 400-meter run in 61.79 seconds, edging Gladstone senior Jamisyn Bergeron by .38 seconds. She also took the 800 (2:36.66) and anchored the winning 1600 relay (4:22.48).
"Ciara definitely had her best meet of the year," said Esky coach Dan DeLong. "Mari Bink also had a good day. Bailey Barron qualified in the 300 hurdles, which was good for her. Caitlyn Davenport came through for us in the 200, and Valerie Royer took second in pole vault, which is the best she has ever done. We got all our relays in and qualified in 13-of-17 events. We'll be ready."
Bink also helped the 1600 relay and won long jump (14-8). Senior Allison Korpi captured discus (104-4), and sophomore Adrianna Getzloff and Marquette's Julia Ott tied for first in high jump (5-0).
Bergeron placed second in long jump (14-4) and third in the 100 (13.42).
Marquette's Beux Truckey won four events, taking the 100 (12.86), 200 (26.73) and anchoring the winning sprint relays. Ott was runner-up in the 100 (13.24) and 200 (26.79).
"The 200 was a tight race," said Truckey. "We help each other, and we're pretty good competition for each other. My starts weren't bad. Julia is a very good runner."
Marquette coach Natalie Messano says competition between Truckey and Ott has been close all year.
"It's been back and forth," she added. "Anytime you can go 1-2 in a regional, it's good for your team. So many girls PR'd today. Everybody contributed and had a good day. Julia gave Beax a run for her money. Sault has a very good team."
The Marquette boys took first in 11 events.
Junior Carson Vanderschaaf copped the 1600 (4:35.72) and 3200 (9:59.88). His twin brother Colin captured the 800 (2:05.42) and was runner-up in the 1600 (4:35.84).
Owen Beauchamp added firsts in the 100 (11.64) and 200 (23.95), and Tryanon Dahlin won long jump (20-3 1/2) and discus (128-4).
Menominee senior Brady Schultz won high jump (6-7), marking at least the third time in a row he cleared 6-7 or more.
Esky junior Dan Smith was runner-up in disc (125-3) and led off the winning 3200 relay (9:11.64).
"Dan took 10 seconds off his time," said Esky coach Scott Dykema. "We told him to get under 2:15 and a run a 2:13. All the guys in that relay did their job. We had a lot of surprises. Zach Morehouse threw three feet farther in shot than he ever has (38-1). We hadn't seen anything more than 36 all year. There were a lot of smiling faces today."
The top four finishers in each event qualified for the U.P. Finals at Kingsford June 4.
Esky and Gladstone return to Marquette for Thursday's Great Northern Conference meet.
