Eskymos overwhelm Maroons, earn sweep

ESCANABA — A pair of Escanaba pitchers made hits a scarce commodity for Menominee, helping the Eskymos sweep to 15-0 and 16-0 softball victories here Wednesday.

Esky’s McKayla Mott didn’t allow any hits through three innings in the first game, and freshman Grayson LaMarche tossed a one-hitter through four frames in the nightcap.

LaMarche struck out 11 of the 13 hitters she faced, allowing just an infield single to Cam Olson in the third frame.

“Both girls pitched two days in a row and performed very well,” said Esky coach Andy Fields. “Menominee hung in there. They’re coming along pretty well.”

Esky led 4-0 after three innings, then exploded for 12 runs in the fourth.

“We were a little lackadaisical in the second game,” said Fields. “We lit a little fire underneath them. The kids were up to the challenge and got it done.”

The Eskymos sent 16 hitters to the plate in the fourth, collecting 11 of their 17 hits.

Abby Hill ripped a two-run triple to rightfield, and Carney Salo added a two-run double to left in the fourth.

Esky opened the scoring on an infield single by LaMarche, and Hill made it 2-0 on a single to center in the second.

The Eskymos added two runs in the third, gaining a four-run cushion on back-to-back doubles to left by Salo and Lizzy Sliva.

Anna Boutilier, Salo, LaMarche and Hill led the Eskymos with three hits each. Erica Moore and Delaney McIntyre added two apiece.

“For the most part, we’re happy with the effort,” said Menominee coach Jim Berger. “Our program has been around for six years, but we’ve had a tough start this year. We have seven seniors and lot of younger players on our team. We need to keep working hard and building.”

Senior Makayla Sinks pitched all four innings in the nightcap and took the loss. She struck out none and walked one.

The Esky Invitational starts today at 4, with the Eskymos hosting Gladstone. The Braves then meet Millington, the third-ranked Division 3 team in Michigan, in the following contest.

Starting at $3.50/week.
