Esky girls 2nd at Negaunee Invitational, Braves boys come home with 3rd place

NEGAUNEE — The Escanaba girls gave chase, but couldn’t catch Negaunee in its annual track and field invitational here Friday.

Negaunee won for the third time in four years with 121 points. Esky scored 97 and defending champion Marquette had 88.

Gladstone senior Jamisyn Bergeron, however, was selected as the meet’s Outstanding Athlete, winning the 800-meter run in two minutes, 35.79 seconds and long jump at 15 feet, two inches.

She was also runner-up to Kyra Sipe of L’Anse in the 400 and third in the 200.

“I didn’t know about anyone from L’Anse,” said Bergeron, who was clocked at 1:03.93 in the 400 and 28.2 in the 200. “Although, she’s a good runner. In the 800, I didn’t think I’d have that at all. I felt tired in the 400, and the wind pushed me back. I’ve got to learn from my mistakes in the 400 to get better in the 800.”

The Kingsford boys were crowned champions for the first time with 164 3/4 points, followed by defending champ Marquette 126 3/4 and Gladstone 79 3/4.

Esky senior Bailey Barron won the girls’ 300-meter hurdles in a personal-best 52.69 seconds and classmate Ciara Ostrenga anchored the winning 1600 and 3200 relays on this sunny and placed third in the 400 (1:04.8) despite running with a broken nose on this windy and warm day.

“The warmer weather definitely had a good effect,” said Barron. “I was feeling good today. “We started with the wind coming at us, then it just carried me. This is a very big confidence builder. I think that’s one of the hardest races there is.”

Esky’s girls covered the 1600 relay in four minutes, 28.26 seconds in the 1600 relay and 11:05.3 in the 3200.

“It was very warm, but it felt all right,” said Ostrenga, whose injury resulted from a mishap in practice last week. “Although, it made it a little more difficult to breathe.”

Negaunee grabbed three of the top four places in shot put and two of the top three spots in discus.

Eliana Juchemich took shot (34-2), and Alyssa Hill won disc (114-1). Esky senior Allison Korpi was runner-up in disc with a personal-best toss of 113-9, and classmate Morgan Gartland placed third in shot with a career-best 31-2.

Gladstone senior Emily Seibert captured pole vault at nine feet, and Esky sophomore Sophia Wagner was runner-up with a personal-best 8-6.

“We had some good performances,” said Esky coach Dan DeLong. “We’re really banged up and had to take some kids out of events. Negaunee’s field events are rock solid. They’re good on the track, too.”

Westwood’s Faith Spiroff set a meet record in high jump at 5-4, topping the old mark (5-3) by Jenny Swanson of Westwood in 1998.

Ishpeming sophomore Lola Korpi copped the 1600 (5:58.03) and helped the Hematites take third in the 3200 relay.

“My calves are really hurting,” said Korpi, who scratched from the 3200. “The wind made it a struggle in the 1600. I thought our relay did a real good job.”

For the boys, Kingsford senior Diego Przeslakowski was named Outstanding Athlete, setting a meet record in the 300 hurdles at 41.46, shaving .54 second off the previous best by Jonas Blum of Ishpeming from four years ago.

“I looked at the clock and saw my time,” said Przeslakowski. “I knew I had a personal best, but I didn’t know I had the meet record. It was a very competitive race. The kid from Marquette (Lamb Ngafeeson) had the fastest time coming in, which gave me a lot of motivation. I knew I needed to get my time down. Now I know what I have to do for the (Division 1) regional. Sub 41 is my goal.”

The Flivvers grabbed the top three places in the 100 and 200 and swept the sprint relays.

“We’ve been working a lot on handoffs,” said senior Trenton Larson who led off the 400 relay clocked at a season-best 44.73. “We feel our speed is good, but you can cut seconds off with good handoffs. We’ve been getting progressively better with each meet.”

Michael Floriano won the 100 (11.22), with Larson taking the 200 (23.37) and Cardel Morton adding a first in the 400 (53.69).

Menominee senior Brady Schultz set the meet record in high jump at 6-7, an inch higher than the previous best by Marquette’s Raphael Millado in 2018.

“This is a credit to Brent Nerat, who was the previous record-holder,” said Schultz, who also won with a school-record leap of 6-9 at Marinette on May 9. “He has been very supportive when I’ve been jumping. He’s constantly cheering me on. I think the confidence had been there to begin with. The warm weather helps a lot, too. Everything just worked well today.”

Marquette junior Carson Vanderschaaf won the 1600 (4:31.52), and Gladstone junior Drew Hughes was runner-up (4:52.39).

Hughes was also runner-up in the 3200 (10:55.48) by more than eight seconds to Marquette senior Luke Janofski.

“With the conditions, the kids ran well,” said Gladstone coach Gary Whitmer. “It was hot. It would have been nice to get that meet (at Esky) in Tuesday. Kingsford is very good in the sprints and field events. Looks like they’re the team to beat.”

Esky junior Dan Smith was runner-up in disc with a personal-best throw of 131-7, nearly six feet shorter than Kingsford’s Noah Johnson.

“That was a personal best by 10 feet,” said Smith. “The key was getting everything out of my head before getting into the ring. I took a more relaxed approach today and felt more comfortable.”
