Braves defeat Maroons

GLADSTONE — A quick response helped the Gladstone Braves post a 15-5 baseball triumph over the Menominee Maroons in five innings here Tuesday.

Menominee scored four times to pull within 5-4 in the second before the Braves answered with six runs in their half of the inning in this Great Northern Conference contest.

Gladstone gained a 7-4 lead on a two-run single by freshman designated hitter Gavin Frossard.

“Gavin is doing well for a freshman,” said Braves coach Joe Darmogray. “He’s seeing and hitting the ball. They made it interesting, then we came right back. We’re getting there. This was one of our better hitting games within the past few weeks. The guys were hitting the ball well.”

Nick Martin added an RBI single to leftfield, and a two-run double to left by Brennan Detiege gave the Braves an 11-4 advantage.

Braden Sundquist made it 12-4 on a sacrifice fly to center by Frossard in the third.

Austin Malke scored Menominee’s fifth run on a wild pitch in the fourth.

The Braves, taking advantage of four walks, a hit batsman and a wild pitch, added the final three runs in their half of the fourth.

“It was a good battle,” said Menominee coach John Javenovsky. “Only, we have to clean up a lot of little mistakes. We have to make good pitches when we get them down with an 0-2 count. Our team is extremely young. We’re a little inexperienced with the younger kids, but you can only get experience by playing games. That will come in time.”

A two-run single to left by Detiege gave Gladstone a 5-0 lead in the opening frame.

The Maroons then took advantage of three errors while shaving their deficit to one in the second.

Gladstone (13-4-1) collected nine hits, including two apiece by senior centerfielder Cam Kelly, Frossard and Detiege.

Menominee (2-9) finished with five, led by Jemison Boivin with two.

Detiege pitched the first three innings, striking out two, walking four and allowing four runs on two hits before moving the first base in the fourth. Casey Alworden walked two and gave up a run on three hits in two innings of relief.

“Casey pitched well for not pitching in a while,” said Darmogray. “Brennan had played since eighth grade and told me he gets a little nervous at first.

“He got a couple fingers caught in a wood splitter last month. They’re still a little tender, and that’s why we put him at first. We wanted to see how well he could take a throw.”

Menominee used three pitchers who issued a combined 11 walks. Starter Gabe Buck, who worked two innings, absorbed the loss. He struck out one, walked three and surrendered 11 runs on seven hits.

The Braves, who played a doubleheader at Negaunee Wednesday, visit Marquette for a single game today at 5:30. The Maroons host Kingsford in a twinbill Monday.

Starting at $3.50/week.
