NEGAUNEE -- The Gladstone boys placed second, and the girls were third in a quadrangular track meet here Tuesday.
Marquette's boys edged Gladstone 87-77, followed by Negaunee 52 and Iron Mountain 40.
The Marquette girls scored 124 points, followed by Negaunee 91, Gladstone 31 and Iron Mountain 10.
Gladstone's Drew Hughes won the 1600-meter run in four minutes, 53.97 seconds and 3200 (10:56.44). John Hansen added a first in the 100 (11.95) and Kostya Olsen took pole vault at nine feet, six inches.
The Braves, who visit Escanaba Friday, also won the 3200 relay (9:15.53).
Gladstone's Jamisyn Bergeron won the girls' 800 (2:40.22), and Emily Seibert captured pole vault (8-6).
"We had a good effort," said Braves coach Jim Murtha. "We had kids doing some different things. We just wanted to see what they could do. Jamie went overdistance to build a little endurance for the 400. She felt it was an easy pace and felt she could have pushed it a little harder. I thought Kristy Karl had a nice day on the hurdles. She struggled with her start in the 100, but her times in both races came down significantly. She's a good hurdler. Our relays also did pretty well. This is a good workout week for us.
"It was chilly and windy, but the sun was out. We're heading in the right direction. We're looking forward to Friday."
