HERMANSVILLE -- Some people run to win and compete.
Others do it for different reasons.
Christe Terrien of Gladstone, among those in the latter category, ran in the Hermansville Hustle five-kilometer run held in memory of her close friend and running partner Sheila Sanville here Saturday morning.
Terrien placed second in the women's 40-49 division in 33 minutes, 17 seconds.
"This is a very important race for me," she said. "I do this particular run in Sheila's memory. I was surprised to get a medal."
Josh Granquist of Powers was the overall winner at 18:27, followed by Kaden Malone (19:13) and Mike Jenkins of Menominee (19:22).
"I was hoping for a little better time," said Granquist. "My legs were tight at first. Once they got warmed up, I got into a rhythm. I got up at 4 a.m. to milk cows. It's helpful to get up and get going right off the bat."
Erin Mattonen of Gladstone took the women's crown in 22:19, followed by Brooke Granquist of Powers (24:08) and McKenzie Walters (27:28).
"I never ran this course before," said Mattonen. "It feels great to take first, but I mostly did this to make Sheila proud. It was an honor to be here."
Sanville, a former teacher and National Honor Society adviser at North Central, lost her battle with lung cancer in 2015.
The event, which drew a record 34 runners, was held under cloudy conditions with temperatures near 40.
