Four area girls earn All-U.P. nods

MARQUETTE — Carney-Nadeau senior Tessa Wagner enjoyed a stellar senior basketball season and was among four area girls to earn All-Upper Peninsula honors here Tuesday.

Wagner landed a Dream Team berth during the annual meeting of the U.P. Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association and first-team Division 4 all-state honors from the Associated Press.

Gladstone senior Claire Van Ginhoven was a first-team selection, and Bark River-Harris senior Cara Zawacki was a second-team pick in Division 1-3, with C-N junior Shae Linder receiving second-team honors in D-4.

Van Ginhoven shared Great Northern Conference Player of the Year honors with Marquette senior Maria Millado.

The Finlandia University recruit was an 87.3-percent free throw shooter and set a single-game school record by going 17-for-17 from the line in the Braves’ season-opening 60-42 triumph at Gwinn.

Zawacki averaged 15.4 points and four rebounds a game and was a first-team selection in the Skyline Central Conference. She plans to continue her basketball career at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wis.

Linder collected 10 assists in a 61-47 loss to Baraga in a D-4 regional final at Kingsford and was an SCC first-team selection.

Wagner was co-Player of the Year with North Dickinson senior Ashton Hord in the SCC.

Also receiving recognition were nine area honorable mention selections.

They include Bark River-Harris sophomore Lauren Zawada, Carney-Nadeau sophomores Grace Maule and Kelsie Smith, Big Bay de Noc junior Alix Bleau and sophomore Camyrn Pederson, Superior Central seniors Riley Johnson and Emma Rutter, Mid Peninsula senior Landry Koski and North Central sophomore Gracie Kleikamp, who carried a 14 1/2-point scoring average.

Koski averaged 10.3 points and 10.1 rebounds. Johnson carried averages of 11.7 points and seven boards, and Maule averaged 11.7 points, 4.2 rebounds and 4.4 assists.
