Esky tennis tops Miners

ESCANABA -- The Escanaba boys tennis team defeated Negaunee 5-3 Thursday in Escanaba.

The Eskymos took singles 3-1, winning No. 1 through No. 3.

At No. 1, Gunner Dlugas topped Luke Syrala in three sets, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4. It was the only match in singles that went to a third set.

Nathan Howes defeated Gavin Saunders at No. 2, taking the first set 6-2 and came away with the contested second 7-5.

Negaunee's Tyler Lajmodiere fell to Shaun Beauchamp 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3, and the Miners picked up their only singles win at No. 4 as Mick Kumpala finished off Connor Smale 6-4, 6-3.

The teams split doubles, with Escanaba winning at No. 1 and No. 3 and Negaunee taking No. 2 and No. 4.

Isaac Maki and Dawson Williams topped Jace Turri and James Thomsen at No. 1 in two sets, 6-1, 6-3.

For No. 3, Troy Delvaux and Evan St. Peter defeated the Miners duo of Zach Brundage and Gavin Jacobson 6-2, 7-5.

At No. 2, Negaunee's Gavin Downey and Bryce Storms earned the win over Joe Hubert and Joseph Montel.

Escanaba visits Gladstone Tuesday.
