Esky baseball splits
FISH CREEK, Wis. — The Escanaba Eskymos baseball team opened its season with a split in Wisconsin this weekend, topping Gibraltar 7-3 and dropping a game to Cumberland 4-1.
Against Gibraltar, the Eskymos fell behind 1-0, and remained there, until the third inning when a Ben Johnson ground out allowed Trent Lawson to cross home plate and tie it at 1.
The Eskymos took the lead shortly after thanks to Bon LaChance singling and driving in Hunter Lancour to lead 2-1.
The two runs were the jolt Esky needed, as it went on to add two more in the top of the fourth courtesy of Trent Lawson as he drove Nick LaFave in on a line drive and then reached home on a wild pitch to make it 4-1.
Each team added one apiece until the Eskymos sealed the game with two more in the top of the seventh courtesy of a Lawson sacrifice fly and Johnson grounder.
Jared Hanson earned the win for the Eskymos, allowing four hits, two runs and one walk while striking out seven over four innings. Lawson entered as relief, striking out three while allowing one hit, one run and two walks over three.
Lawson led Esky with three RBIs, four hits and two runs with four at-bats. Johnson and LaChance picked up an RBI apiece, and Scott Hillier and LaFave each collected two hits.
In the second game Saturday, Cumberland limited the Eskymos to just one run in the third to earn the 4-1 win.
After a Cumberland run in the second, Hanson’s line drive single drove in Johnson in the bottom of the third to tie it at 1.
However, the Eskymos suffered near three-and-outs for the remainder of the game.
LaChance took the loss for Esky after beginning relief in the fifth inning. He allowed one hit, three runs (2 earned) and three walks while striking out seven.
Lancour pitched the first four, allowing three hits, one run and one walk and struck out five.
Hanson earned the Eskymos sole RBI, and Lawson, Johnson and Hanson each notched one hit apiece.
The Eskymos visit Menominee Thursday.
