Broncos’ Hoffmeyer wins 60 and 200 dash

HOUGHTON — Bark River-Harris’ Makenzie Hoffmeyer earned two chances to stand on top of the podium here Tuesday, winning the girls’ 60 and 200-meter dashes in the Michigan Tech Keweenaw Classic indoor track meet.

The sophomore sprinter was clocked at 8.66 and 29.03 seconds, respectively, in the Broncos’ season debut at the MTU Student Development Complex.

“I was real nervous at first,” she said. “After the 60, I felt a little more relaxed. I was in the fifth lane in the 200. I knew I had to go out fast. It was pretty important to get this in.”

Junior Hazel Conklin won her heat and placed fourth overall in the 60 hurdles (11.45), and the Broncos were fifth in the 3200 relay (12:11.2).

“It was great to see Mckenzie win the 60 and 200, and Hazel ran a good time,” said BR-H coach Jason Lockwood. “This is the first year we’ve been able to field a 3200 relay team. What I’m most proud of is they cut a minute from their previous practice. That was a very good start for the day.”

BR-H junior Vincent Martin also reached the podium by placing third in the boys’ 60 (7.68) prior to adding a fifth in the 200 (26.52).

The Broncos are idle until April 21 when they visit Kingsford.

Stephenson juniors Spencer Coldren and Griffin Brown placed 1-2 in the 400 at 56.55 and 56.72. The Eagles also took the 1600 relay (3:56.1).

Dollar Bay senior Nik Thomas took the 800 (2:08.9) and 1600 (4:37.8), edging Houghton senior Eric Weiss by .01 second. The Blue Bolts also won the 3200 relay (9:35.3).

“It was absolutely critical to get this in,” said Houghton coach Erik Johnson. “With 44 guys on the team, any open meet you can get in is good. This gave us a chance to compete with schools we often don’t see.”

West Iron County senior Landon Sundelius won the 60 hurdles (10.07).

Houghton senior Ingrid Seagren copped the girls’ 800 (2:37.6). Junior teammate Claire Filpus captured the 1600 (5:56.7), and the Gremlins won the 3200 relay (10:26.7).

The Negaunee girls dominated shot put, led by senior Alyssa Hill’s winning toss of 35 feet, seven inches. Junior Eliana Juchemich was runner-up (31-7 1/2), and senior Natalie Bell was fourth (30-5).

“We appreciate the opportunity to have shot put,” said Negaunee coach Vickie Paupore. “I think that’s one area where we’re going to be strong. We’re happy to take second in the 3200 relay. We ran a good time (10:28.7). It was nice for our younger kids to have the experience.”

Lake Linden-Hubbell sophomore took the 60 hurdles (10.77), followed by freshman Emily Jokela (11.29).

Ontonagon ran away with the 1600 relay in 4:43.8, followed by Stephenson (4:53.8) and Negaunee (4:54.4).

“We were pretty nervous before the race but got a good effort from everyone,” said junior Makenna Uotila, who anchored that relay. “Our handoffs went pretty smooth, and we ran some good times for the first meet. I believe we’re going to have a pretty exciting year.”

West Iron sophomore took the 400 (1:02.5), slightly more than two seconds ahead of L’Anse senior Kyra Sipe.
