HERMANSVILLE — Gladstone fought back from a four-run deficit to defeat the North Central Jets 9-6 in a rain-drenched baseball game Monday afternoon in Hermansville.
“It was reminiscent of the Iron Mountain game to me,” said Braves coach Joe Darmogray. “I told these kids I was pretty upset the first couple innings, but they battled back.”
Unlike the 9-8 loss against Iron Mountain, the Braves were able to overcome the four-run lead held by North Central after two innings.
A solo home run from Hunter Solis and an RBI groundball from Braden Sundquisty to bring Nick Martin home halved the Jets’ lead 4-2 in the third.
Gladstone followed the two-run inning up in the fourth — where they cracked the game open — with six more runs to make it 8-4.
John Soderman scored the first run for the Braves in the fourth after he and North Central catcher Alex Naser got tangled up, while Soderman was caught in a rundown between third and home.
Officials ruled interference, which brought Soderman across the plate.
Solis continued his solid at-bats in the game with an RBI single to score Casey Alworden, while Tyler Darmogray brought in Bagwell on a single stretched into a double for the go-ahead run.
Martin knocked in Solis on the next at-bat, while two base on balls — Cam Kelly was hit by a pitch, and Soderman walked in his second plate appearance in the inning — brought in two more runs for the Braves to make it 8-4.
Though the win was a happy moment for Gladstone, recent injuries have left several holes — with Brennan Detiege and Noah Peterson both out of commission and Cam Kelly nursing an arm injury that limits him to offense — at the pitching position for the weeks ahead.
“We’re down three pitchers for sure,” coach Darmogray said. “Brennan is going to try, his left is still good, he’s going to try to throw. He can throw, but he can’t catch. Noah, I don’t think he’ll be here for a while and big Cam with his arm, too. It’s going to be thin for a while.”
Coach Darmogray has already spoken to several JV players to help fill the empty spots for the Braves in the games ahead.
“We’ll try to manage and see what we can do,” he said. “I’m going to play with a couple of these JV kids and see what happens and see if I can get something out of them.”
Gavin Frossard toed the rubber for the first two innings for Gladstone giving up four earned runs with one strikeout and two walks. Austin Bagwell took over and pitched the next two and gave up two hits with two strikeouts.
Braden Sundquist closed the game for Gladstone. He walked four, struck out one, and gave up one hit and a total of two runs, with only one being earned.
Four North Central runs came in the second inning with two outs already recorded.
Evan Hancheck had an RBI to start things with Andrew Webber scoring.
Luke Gorzinski hit a two-run RBI double up next then stole third and went home on the missed play at third to make it 4-0.
“I definitely think — we never have beaten Gladstone — but I think we beat ourselves tonight,” said North Central coach Jason Mercier. “We had a few big errors in there, we had a big interference call that would have been an out. On that play, right there, I would have gladly exchanged an out for a run at that point.”
Despite the low moments in the game, coach Mercier still took some positives away for moving forward.
“We hit the ball good today, we pitched in brutal conditions, just as they did,” he said. “We just made too many errors.”
Jesse Sampson started the game for the Jets three and a third. He gave up eight runs — four earned — a total of five hits, one walk, and struck out two.
Adrian Mercier came in and threw the last two and two-thirds innings. He allowed a hit, a run, and fanned four at the plate.
Gladstone visits Negaunee Wednesday while North Central plays Superior Central on Thursday.
