Baraga senior Osterman Miss U.P. Basketball
MARQUETTE — The Baraga girls made a statement during this basketball season and were rewarded for their efforts during the annual meeting of the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association here Tuesday.
Top-ranked Baraga, a unanimous pick for U.P. Division 4 Team of the Year, defeated second-ranked Carney-Nadeau 61-47 in the regional final at Kingsford and third-ranked Pickford 57-40 in a state quarterfinal contest at Munising.
Senior Reide Osterman was selected Miss U.P. Basketball as Player of the Year, and Baraga’s Tyler Larson got the nod for Coach of the Year.
Osterman also earned Player of the Year honors in the Copper Mountain Conference and was awarded all-state first-team honors in D-4 by the Associated Press. She averaged 16.1 points and 3.8 assists a game.
The Vikings, who dropped a 51-45 decision to Fowler in the state semifinals, finished 23-2.
C-N senior Tessa Wagner also received all-state first-team and U.P. Dream Team honors, averaging 22.1 points, 16 1/2 rebounds and seven blocked shots.
Wagner, who has drawn recruiting interest from 11 colleges and universities, finished her career with 1,590 points and shared Player of the Year honors with North Dickinson senior Ashton Hord in the Skyline Central Conference.
Hord, a first-team pick, scored 1,201 points throughout her career and averaged 14 points and less than two turnovers per contest this season. She received all-state honorable mention.
St. Ignace senior Ally Schultz, Negaunee senior Alyssa Hill and Westwood senior Natalie Prophet joined Osterman and Wagner on the Dream Team.
Schultz, an all-state D-3 first-team selection who played junior high ball at Bark River-Harris, averaged 20.1 points, six rebounds, 5.2 assists, 6.8 steals this season and finished with 1,325 points. This year’s Straits Area Conference Player of the Year will continue her basketball career at Ferris State University.
Hill, this season’s Mid-Peninsula Conference Player of the Year, carried a 19.6-point average and was an all-state second-team pick in D-2.
St. Ignace’s Dorene Ingalls was picked Coach of the Year in Division 1-3, leading the Saints through a 20-3 campaign.
Negaunee earned Team of the Year honors in Division 1-2, with Calumet named the top team in D-3.
The Miners (18-6) defeated Sault Ste. Marie 42-29 in a regional opener at Manistique prior to dropping a 34-31 decision to Ludington in the championship contest.
Calumet (20-3) rolled past BR-H 69-34 in its regional opener at Marquette, then bowed to Maple City Glen Lake 53-39 in the title game at Engadine.
The Copper Kings were led by senior Marybeth Halonen, WestPAC Conference Player of the Year and a first-team pick in Division 1-3.
St. Ignace, also nominated for Team of the Year, fell at Glen Lake 53-34 in the regional opener.
Pickford senior Kennedy Guild was named Player of the Year in the Eastern U.P. Conference and was a first-team selection in D-4.
