Norse can’t overcome McHenry in twinbill
CRYSTAL LAKE, Ill. — The games were closer than 24 hours earlier, but the Bay College Norse still fell to McHenry County College 7-4 and 10-2 in a baseball doubleheader here Monday.
Bay, which was outscored 27-0 through two games Sunday, trailed 5-0 after the first inning of Monday’s opener.
The Norse (1-12) got on the board in the second on a single to centerfield by freshman John Robinette.
In the fourth, sophomore Drake Forrest drove in Bay’s second run on a single to right. Freshman Sam Kiiskila made it 5-3 on a wild pitch and Forrest shaved the deficit to one after the Norse executed a double steal.
The Norse put two runners on board with nobody out in the fifth but failed to score.
McHenry (10-3) secured the decision by scoring a run each in its half of the fifth and sixth.
Freshman Austin Burnside pitched the entire contest and absorbed the loss.
He struck out six, walked one and gave up seven hits.
The Norse took an early lead in the nightcap on a two-run single to center by sophomore Hector Araguayan.
Freshman Jaden Hackbarth, however, tied the score on a two-run homer to right in the second.
The Scots took the lead for good in the fifth on freshman Tyler Castro’s two-run shot.
They led 5-2 after five and added five runs in the sixth.
Forrest had two hits, but the Norse stranded 12 baserunners.
Dalton Graham, who worked five innings, took the loss. He fanned seven, walked three and allowed five runs on five hits.
“This is a very good team we just faced,” said Bay head coach Mike Pankow. “I thought our players were too slow to make adjustments yesterday (Sunday), but after getting our tails kicked, this crew responded. Most importantly our hitters made some serious adjustments to their pitching and gave a really good team a scare. If we continue to take these kinds of strides, good things are in store for this team going forward.”
Bay returns to Illinois to face Harper College in a doubleheader Friday and College of DuPage in twinbills Saturday and Sunday.
