EAST LANSING -- With wins in their respective semifinal games Thursday afternoon at the Breslin Center in East Lansing, the Menominee Maroons and Ewen-Trout Creek Panthers will battle for state titles in their respective divisions Saturday.
The 23-2 Maroons have been one of the top Division 3 teams all year long and they showed why Thursday by defeating Ecorse 74-56 in the semifinal round.
Menominee will face the 24-2 Schoolcraft Saturday afternoon at 4:00 for the MHSAA Division 3 State Championship.
One of the Maroons three losses came at the hands of their U.P. compatriots in the Division 4 state final, the Ewen-Trout Creek Panthers who won that game 59-58 in overtime.
The Panthers -- who, like Menominee in D-3, have been a D-4 powerhouse this season -- punched their ticket to the finals with a win 62-56 over Lake Leelanau St. Mary.
Like the Maroons, the Panthers have battled their way to the finals earning a 23-3 record along the way.
E-TC will play the winner of Wyoming Tri-Unity (19-6) and Genesee Christian (21-4) Saturday morning at 10:00 for the MHSAA Division 4 State Championship.
