Esky topples Maroons
MENOMINEE — Third time’s the charm for the team consistently ranked second in the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association basketball poll as they toppled first-ranked Menominee 57-42 on the Maroons own floor Tuesday.
The Eskymos (12-4, 5-2 GNC) took two losses against the Maroons (77-44 Jan. 17, 65-62 Feb. 1) earlier in the season but engineered its revenge, outscoring or tying the Maroons in each quarter.
“We kind of moved away from our zones and went to man-to-man,” Esky coach Tracy Hudson said. “We tried to guard the three and guard the paint. We got off to a great start. It was kind of even after the first quarter, but we had about a 10-point lead at halftime. We just kind of kept that lead.
“Our kids played great defense. We felt like we let one get away at our place (Feb. 1), and we got down there in front of a huge crowd and wanted to play 32 minutes. We had great balance, and we handled the run-and-jump. We played great man defense and shared the ball and made big plays.”
The Eskymos were led by Colin Hudson with 21 points and Connor Smale collected 10. Trevor Brown pulled down a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
“Every time they would try to eat into the lead, there would be a big three from Jared Hanson, Connor Smale, Colin (Hudson). Trevor Brown was a beast inside. He had 12 rebounds. He had a great game.”
Aidan Bellisle led the Maroons (14-2, 5-0 GNC) with 16.
“We made some mistakes on Cooper Conway,” coach Hudson said. “With Aidan, there was some pick-and-rolls up top that we had to adjust on that he kind of hurt us on in the first half.”
The Eskymos shined from beyond the arc, shooting 8-12 compared to Menominee’s 5-19.
“We’re playing pretty well right now,” coach Hudson said. “It was a great win for us.”
