C-N cruises by Rockets

RAPID RIVER — Second-ranked Carney-Nadeau wanted to work on some things in a Skyline Central Conference girls basketball game here Thursday night.

The Wolves achieved that while cruising past the Rapid River Rockets 64-13.

“We really wanted to work on our execution in our half-court game,” said C-N coach Ken Linder. “We also worked on getting shots at the end of each quarter. We did well on the things we needed to work on.”

An example of that took place at the end of the third quarter when freshman Grace Maule drained a buzzer-beating 15-foot set shot which gave the Wolves a 52-4 advantage.

The Wolves (12-1) scored the first 11 points before junior Megan Dausey’s layup got the Rockets on the board with two minutes, 46 seconds left in the first quarter.

C-N led 21-2 after the opening frame and extended its advantage to 29-2 on a 20-foot set shot by junior Carley Messersmith with 5:30 left in the second stanza.

A layup by junior Shae Linder made it 37-4 at halftime, and the Wolves extended their advantage to 58-4 on a putback by senior Tessa Wagner three minutes into the fourth quarter.

“I like the way they work hard,” said coach Linder. “They worked the ball around well. They’ve improved for the first time we played them (in a 79-11 victory Jan. 18). Looks like they’re heading in the right direction. Scott’s a good coach. Hopefully, things will work out well for them in at least one game.”

Shae Linder and Maule led the Wolves with 15 points apiece. Wagner finished with 14, and freshman Mariska Laurila had 10. Dausey scored six for the Rockets.

“One of our goals was to hold Wagner under 20 points,” said Rockets’ coach Scott Goodacre. “I thought we did a pretty good job on defense even though the score doesn’t show it. We’re a pretty good defensive bunch. We kind of stayed in a 2-3 zone and did a pretty good rotation. We’re just struggling on offense. We’re having a hard time with entry passes. We have to make ourselves available and come to the ball.”

The Wolves, who host North Central Monday, committed just four turnovers. The Rockets had 25.

“Hats off to Carney-Nadeau,” said Goodacre. “They really move that ball around and are very good around loose balls. We still had a lot of turnovers but did much better than in our previous game. We had 39 Monday night (in a 44-10 loss to Stephenson).”

Rapid River, which was limited to 4-of-27 shooting from the field, visits Manistique Tuesday.
