Wolves overcome Bark River
HARRIS — It was a tale of two halves in the battle between the Bark River-Harris and Carney-Nadeau girls basketball teams Friday in Bark River. The Wolves (6-0) bounced back from a slow first half to earn a 48-38 win.
“We started off slow and turned the ball over too much,” Wolves coach Ken Linder said. “Pretty much all the things we talked about before the game we did to a negative effect. We talked about it at halftime and did a much better job in the second half.”
After locking down the Wolves, and Tessa Wagner in particular, in the first half, the Broncos (4-3) entered the locker room leading 24-19.
“We were leading at halftime,” Broncos coach Matt Richer said. “Then, we had a stinker of a third quarter. We made one basket the whole quarter. Tressa Ives scored the only basket, and we had a couple free throws by Olivia Erickson. In the quarter, they (Carney) scored 14, so that was pretty much the ball game right there.”
After the third quarter, the Wolves build on a 33-28 lead to seal the win.
Cara Zawacki led Bark River with 10.
“Lauren Zawada kind of got us going in the first quarter, and Alaska Peterson hit some layups,” Richer said. “We’ve had some trouble starting games in the past, so that was nice to see.”
The Wolves were led by Shae Linder with 12. She was followed by Gracie Maule with 11 and Kelsie Smith who notched 10.
“Shae had a really good game for us in the second half,” coach Linder said. “Kelsie Smith played some valuable minutes off the bench for us.”
Bark River hosts Munising today, and Carney visits North Dickinson Wednesday.
