Fouls, turnovers hamper Braves against Maroons
GLADSTONE — Foul trouble and turnovers took their toll on the Gladstone girls in a 50-29 basketball loss to the Menominee Maroons here Tuesday night.
Three starters fouled out in the fourth quarter, and another ended with four fouls for the Braves, who committed 23 turnovers. The Maroons had 18 miscues in this Great Northern Conference match-up.
Gladstone tied the score at 13 on a 17-foot jump shot by senior guard Jamisyn Bergeron 30 seconds into the second quarter.
The Braves, however, turned the ball over 10 times in the second, and the Maroons took advantage of some of those while surging to a 27-13 lead.
“I thought we played a good-paced offense,” said Menominee coach Lucas Chouinard. “The girls were very patient and did a good job switching on defense. During one of the time-outs, we told the girls we needed to string together some stops. We had five in a row and capitalized on every one.”
Gladstone was within 38-25 following a lay-in by junior center Aliana Martinez early in the fourth quarter.
Menominee (8-5 overall, 2-1 GNC) responded with six unanswered points, gaining an insurmountable 44-25 advantage on a pair of gifters by senior forward Anna Nerat with five minutes, 25 seconds remaining.
The Braves took their only lead at 11-10 on a 22-foot jumper by senior guard Chloe Hanson late in the opening frame.
Menominee regained the lead on a buzzer-beating 23-foot jumper by Nerat.
Senior center Kennedy Olson led the taller Maroons with 17 points, and Nerat added 14.
“We have two girls who can finish down low, and Kennedy and Anna did a nice job with that tonight,” said Chouinard. “Overall, I thought the girls did a good job putting pressure on their defense.”
The Braves (3-8 overall, 1-4 GNC) were led by van Ginhoven, who sank all six of her free throws and scored 11 points. Bergeron added seven.
“I thought we did a good job limiting van Ginhoven’s opportunities,” said Chouinard. “We know she’s a good free throw shooter. You have to limit those.”
Gladstone, which won the jayvee game 42-30, visits Manistique Thursday. Menominee travels to Marquette Friday.
