ESCANABA -- The Bay College men ran the floor with authority in a 129-30 basketball rout of the Lake Superior State University JVs here Monday night.
Lake State was within 8-5 following a 23-foot jump shot by Sault Ste. Marie graduate Kaaleb Ranta two minutes into the game.
Bay answered with a 19-2 run, gaining a 27-7 advantage on a putback by West Iron County grad Justin Nelson midway through the first half.
All 18 cagers got playing time for the Norse (3-0), who led 65-17 at halftime of their home opener.
"We got off to a good start and made shots," said Bay coach Matt Johnson. "When you make shots, everything else goes a lot better. The main thing is we stayed healthy. We spread the minutes as evenly as possible. Getting the guys playing time will be good for us down the road. The most important stat in my mind is they didn't shoot any free throws. Our guys stayed disciplined, which is something we struggled with last year."
Seventeen players scored for the Norse, who placed five in double digits. They were led by freshman guard Lamar Grayson of Richfield, Minn., with 17 points. Isaiah Kennedy of Prince George County, Md. added 16. Nelson finished with 12. Freshman forward Aloung Kang of Apple Valley, Minn. hit 11, and Calumet grad Brevin Antilla had 10.
The Norse hit 27-of-36 field goals in the second half and finished 52-of-80 from the floor. They held a 52-17 rebounding advantage, with Escanaba grad Carter Hudson leading the way with seven.
The Norse got 93 points from their bench and scored 78 in the paint. They committed nine turnovers, and LSSU had 20.
"I think our strength is our depth," said Johnson. "We play aggressive, but we still need to be disciplined. We made our guys make more passes and run our offense through more than we typically do."
Petoskey grad Jack Izzard scored eight points for the Lakers in their season-opener. They finished 13-of-53 from the field and had 16 points in the paint.
The Norse travel to the Mesabi Iron Range in northern Minnesota this weekend, visiting Hibbing Community College Friday and Mesabi Range C.C. Saturday.
