Jets mirror season onto All-U.P. awards, excel

MARQUETTE — To the victors go the spoils.

The North Central Jets did nothing but win throughout this football season and were a unanimous choice as the eight-player Team of the Year during the 72nd annual meeting of the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association here Wednesday.

The Jets, guided by Coach of the Year Leo Gorzinski, dispatched Marion 73-8 in Saturday’s semifinal game at Powers for its 22nd straight victory.

North Central outscored their opponents 681-43, with their closest game taking place on Oct. 22 at Crystal Falls in a 42-0 triumph over Forest Park for their regular-season finale.

North Central (12-0) hopes to complete its second straight perfect season in Saturday’s Division 2 State Championship game against Colon at 2 p.m. in Northern Michigan University’s Superior Dome.

Jets’ junior Luke Gorzinski earned Offensive Player of the Year honors, averaging 17.8 yards per carry. He also averages 17.9 yards a pass and 43.7 per catch.

“Luke is one of the most intelligent and gifted athletes we have in the U.P.,” said coach Gorzinski. “He’s the offensive and defensive leader for us.”

Luke, who has seen limited action in the second half, averages 17.8 yards a carry, 17.9 per pass, 43.7 per catch and has thrown for 28 touchdowns and no interceptions.

Classmate Wyatt Raab was named Defensive Player of the Year but has also made his presence known on offense, rushing 10 times for 223 yards and five touchdowns in the semifinal game.

“Wyatt has been the most disrupted defensive lineman in our league (Great Lakes Eight West),” said coach Gorzinski. “He’s strong and fast with great leverage and balance from his wrestling background. He has been a main reason why teams have only scored twice and been held to 47 first downs for the entire (regular) season.”

Additional Dream Team selections include Jets’ junior kicker Jaden Walters, senior return specialist Alex Naser and senior offensive lineman Lane Nehring and Norway junior punter Aiden Richards.

Walters booted a 25-yard field goal and eight extra points against Marion.

“Jaden has the power to send kickoffs into the end zone and great accuracy kicking extra points,” said coach Gorzinski. “Alex is a special and gifted athlete. He’s a quick, shifty runner with great hands, vision and power. He fills many roles for us.”

Naser suffered a hairline fracture below his knee in a 71-6 romp over Ontonagon Oct. 8 but returned in time for the regional championship game against Forest Park, which the Jets won 65-8 on Nov. 5.

Starting at $3.50/week.
