Tech women earn
pair of road wins
ABERDEEN, S.D. — The Michigan Tech Huskies (5-1) women’s basketball team finished a weekend road trip with two more wins for the 2021 season.
Saturday, the Huskies defeated the Northern State University Wolves(4-2) 81-69.
Friday, Tech defeated the Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons (0-4) 65-53.
Daisy Ansel (11), Ellie Mackay (14), Alex Rondorf (12), Katelyn Meister (11) and Clara Johnson (10) all contributed at least 10 points offensively for the Huskies in the Saturday win over the Wolves. Ansel also had eight rebounds in the game.
Meister (17) Rondorf (15) and Sara Dax (11) were Friday’s biggest offensive contributors for Tech while Mackay had eight rebounds.
The MTU women start GLIAC conference play Saturday in Midland against Northwood University.
MTU men split
HOUGHTON — After opening the weekend with a 76-42 loss against the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs (6-0) on Friday, the Michigan Tech Huskies (3-2) bounced back Saturday with a 90-76 triumph against the St. Cloud State Huskies.
MTU was anchored by Trent Bell in the St. Cloud win. Bell had a double-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds. However, Owen White led the Tech scoring with 25 points. Eric Carl was also a key contributor for Tech as he had 18 points in the game.
Friday, the Huskies were stifled by the Bulldogs as they lost 76-42.
Saturday is the next time MTU hits the court with their first GLIAC contest of the year in Midland against Northwood University.
NMU women split
two road games
DULUTH, MINN. & ST. CLOUD, MINN. — The Northern Michigan University Wildcats (4-2) women’s hoopers split a pair of road games Friday with a 53-35 against the St. Cloud State Huskies (3-1) in St. Cloud, Minn. and a 68-57 victory over the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs (2-3) Saturday in Duluth.
The Saturday win saw Makaylee Kuhn bucket 28 points for the Cats as she also had six total rebounds. Emily Mueller also snagged six rebounds for NMU.
The Cats head to Northwood University in Midland Thursday for their first GLIAC conference game of the season.
NMU men lose
two at home
MARQUETTE — The first home games in the regular season for the Northern Michigan University Wildcats (3-3) men’s basketball team ended with two losses as the Cats lost 89-73 against the St. Cloud State Huskies Saturday and 76-63 against the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs Sunday in Marquette.
After an even first half Sunday that saw the Cats and Bulldogs tied at 31, Minnesota Duluth pulled away with a 45-point second half.
Max Bjorklund had 23 points to lead Northern.
In the Saturday loss against St. Cloud, Bjorklund led the Cats again alongside Tre Harvey as both scored 16 points in the game.
The NMU men head to Midland to face Northwood University to open GLIAC conference play Thursday.
Tech takes two
on home ice
HOUGHTON — The Michigan Tech Huskies (8-5-0. 5-3-0 CCHA) hockey team earned a pair of wins — 6-4 Friday, 6-1 Saturday — over the Ferris State Bulldogs (4-12, 2-6 CCHA).
Tech won in dominant fashion Saturday night over the Falcons. Matthew Quercia and Brett Thorne each put in a shot to put Tech up 2-0 in the first period.
Tristan Ashbrook scored twice in the second — the first on a power play — with Arvid Caderoth also netting one for the Huskies. Brian Halonen put one more in for Tech for good measure in the third to make it 6-1.
Friday night, the Huskies had to make the comeback to win. Down 3-1 after the first, MTU scored twice in the second — on goals from Trenton Bliss and Colin Sowyer — and three times in the third — one from Halonen and two from Ashbrook — to complete the comeback and take the win 6-4.
Tech heads to Mankato next weekend to play the Minnesota State Mankato Mavericks.

sweep Falcons
MARQUETTE — The Northern Michigan University Wildcat’s hockey team (8-6-1, 6-5-1 CCHA) began a two-week homestand with a sweep — a 6-3 win Friday and shootout win Saturday — over the Bowling Green Falcons (8-6-1, 6-5-1 CCHA).
After ending regulation tied at three Saturday, AJ Vanderbeck and Mike Colella each netted pucks for the Cats in the shootout while Rico DiMatteo blocked three shots to help give the cats the shootout win. Mack Byers, Vanderbeck and Joseph Nardi all collected shots for the Cats in regulation.
Friday, Northern had two goals in each period –David Keefer and Oscar Geschwind in the first, Colella and Byers in the second and Ghantous and Vanderbeck in the third — to defeat Bowling Green 6-3.
The Wildcats stay on home ice for a two-game series against the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs Friday and Saturday in Marquette.
