NMU, Tech Hockey
HOUGHTON and MARQUETTE — The Michigan Tech University Huskies (5-4-0) and Northern Michigan University Wildcats (5-6-0) split their rivalry weekend with the Wildcats taking the overtime win 3-2 Friday in Houghton and Tech winning 5-2 in Marquette Saturday.
The Saturday half of the series saw the Huskies score four straight goals after dropping behind 2-1 in the second period to take the 5-2 win. Trenton Bliss tied it up at 14:06 in the second, Arvid Caderoth gave MTU the lead 65 seconds later and Logan Pietila scored another for good measure 14:44 into the third. Brian Halonen put the icing on the cake with an empty netter.
The Wildcats AJ Vanderbeck sealed the OT win on Friday night only 1:24 into extra time.
Northern heads to Ferris State for two games this weekend while Tech hits the road to visit Bemidji State.
NMU women
MARQUETTE — The Northern Michigan University Wildcats women’s basketball team (2-0) opened their season this weekend with two wins at home over William Jewell (61-41) Saturday and Lewis (61-56) Sunday.
Makaylee Kuhn led scoring for the Cats against Lewis Sunday with 13 points, while Emily Mueller had 10 rebounds.
Saturday saw Kuhn leading NMU in points as well with 24. She also led the team in rebounds with nine.
Northern hosts the University of Minnesota Crookston Thursday at 5:30 at the Berry Events Center.
NMU men
ROMEOVILLE, Ill. — The Northern Michigan University Wildcats men’s basketball team (1-1) opened their regular season this weekend with a pair of games at the GLVC/GLIAC Challenge in Romeoville, Ill. Friday — a 67-57 win over Lewis University — and Saturday — a 75-62 loss against McKendree University.
In Saturday’s defeat to McKendree, Tre Harvey and Justin Kuehl each put up 10 points for the Cats while John Kerr had eight rebounds.
Friday, Nick Wagner put up 22 points for NMU on the Cats’ way to winning over Lewis. Ben Wolf had nine rebounds in the game.
Up next for the NMU men is a road trip to take on the University of Minnesota Crookston Thursday.
Tech women
MARQUETTE — Like their NMU rivals, the Michigan Tech Huskies women’s basketball team also opened their season with two wins in Marquette this weekend with a 75-71 win against Lewis University Saturday and a 75-49 victory against William Jewell College Sunday.
Sara Dax had 19 points for MTU in the Sunday win over WJC while Clara Johnson had 15 and Ellie MacKay had 11.
MacKay led Tech in scoring in the Saturday contest against Lewis with 18. She also had nine rebounds. Daisy Ansel (14) and Alex Rondorf (13) were both also double-digit contributors for the Huskies’ scoring in the game.
Tech will play the University of Minnesota Crookston Friday in Houghton.
Tech men
ROMEOVILLE, Ill. — The Michigan Tech Huskies men’s basketball team (1-1) competed in the Lewis Tournament this weekend in Romeoville, Ill., coming home with a 64-56 win over Lewis University Saturday and a 74-59 loss against McKendree University Friday.
Erica Carl and Owen White each put up 22 points in the Saturday victory against Lewis. Trent Bell had 12 rebounds for Tech in the game.
Despite 29 points from Bryson Bultman, and 10 from Luke Hensler, the Huskies lost absorbed the 74-59 loss against McKendree on Friday.
The Michigan Tech men will be traveling to Crookston to play the University of Minnesota Crookston Saturday.
