Maroons displace Redmen

ESCANABA — There was a shake-up at the top of the Upper Peninsula Sports Writers and Sportscasters Association and 11-player football poll as the Menominee Maroons (5-2) unseated the Marquette Redmen (5-2) as the number one ranked team.

Menominee defeated Marquette last Friday 34-13 in Marquette.

Third place this week saw a tie between the Westwood Patriots (6-1) and Negaunee Miners (6-1) while Calumet (5-2) and Sault Ste. Marie (4-3) swapped spots at number five and honorable mention.

In the 8-player poll, the top two — the undefeated Jets of North Central (7-0) and Trojans of Forest Park (7-0) — remained put along with the third-place Pickford Panthers (6-1).

The Munising Mustangs (5-2) — who improved from honorable mention — and Ontonagon Gladiator (5-2) — who lost 71-6 to North Central — found themselves tied for fourth this week.

Dropping from fifth to honorable mention was Newberry (5-2), who joined the Rudyard Bulldogs (5-2) in that spot this week.
