Carney’s Jake Polfus wins MISH Waterfront 5k

GLADSTONE — Jake Polfus of Carney earned top honors in the MISH Waterfront Fall Color five-kilometer run here Saturday, covering the 3.1-mile course in 18 minutes, 50.6 seconds.

He was followed by Dylan Gauthier of Escanaba (20:40.3) and Adam Snider of Fort Gratiot, Mich. (22:28.2).

“I just go out and run and have fun,” said Polfus. “My wife (Jenni) has been training for a while, and I wanted to do something with her. This is a great time to be running with all the fall colors and perfect weather.”

Jaimie Parrett of Menominee topped the women at a personal-best 24:10.4, followed by Amanda Jandro of Wilson (24:42.5) and Jenni Polfus of Carney (25:30.5).

“I’m pleased with my time,” said Parrett. “I wanted to get a PR and got it. This feels very rewarding.”

Ahmed Elnoshokaty of Marquette won the men’s 10-K at 42:27.7, followed by Kyle Smith of Gladstone (46:19.3) and women’s champion Erin Mattonen of Gladstone (47:26).

“I just got here two minutes before the start,” said Elnoshokaty, who’s originally from Egypt. “Traffic was light on the way down. This is a real nice race, and everybody is having fun. I remember doing this race last year and having heck of a headwind coming in. I just tried to get into a steady pace.”

Chris Cazzola of Vulcan was the third men’s finisher in 48:01.1.

In the women’s race, Mattonen was followed by Erica Nelson and Tiffanie Decker, both of Marquette at 48:26 and 49:37.5, respectively.

“My strategy was to try to catch the little boy (Smith) in the orange shirt,” said Mattonen. “He was my inspiration. It’s good to see kids take an interest in exercise rather than playing with electronics. The weather was good, and I felt good all the way. This was a great race.”

The races, which drew approximately 135 runners, were run under partly cloudy conditions with temperatures in the mid-60s.
