Braves boys retain XC conference title
ISHPEMING — The Gladstone boys retained their Mid-Peninsula Conference cross country title here Monday, squeezing past Negaunee 36-37.
Third-place Manistique scored 63 points, and Westwood had 82. Gwinn and Ishpeming didn’t field complete teams.
Gladstone junior Drew Hughes repeated as M-PC champ, covering the 3.1-mile course in 17 minutes, 40.2 seconds for his 11th straight victory.
He was followed by Negaunee juniors James Dank (19:01.6), Judge Anderson (19:16.8) and John Plaxco (19:33.2) and Braves’ freshman Aaron Hughes (19:47.7).
Gladstone sophomore Tanner Howes placed sixth (20:28.5), and senior teammate Andrew Bracket was seventh (20:29.3)
Junior Grant Mason was Manistique’s leader in ninth (20:52.1).
The Negaunee girls won with 25 points, followed by defending champion Gladstone 42 and Westwood 56. Manistique and Ishpeming had no team scores.
Ishpeming sophomore Lola Korpi won in 21:04.4, followed by Negaunee freshman Marlee Plaxco (21:41.9), junior Endla Harris (22:19.6) and Lauren Ossenheimer (22:26.4).
Senior Samantha Strasler led the Braves in seventh (22:54.5) and classmate Jamisyn Bergeron was ninth (24:05.6).
Freshman Calista Watchhorn led Manistique in 17th (26:21.1).
The season concludes with Saturday’s Upper Peninsula Finals at Marquette.
