Historic sweep for Braves against Esky

ESCANABA — The Gladstone Braves football teams set a historical school record by defeating rival Escanaba in all three gridiron games. First, it was the Braves’ Junior High team winning 21-7 over Escanaba, then the Braves JVs defeated the Eskymos 24-0 and followed by Gladstone High School’s 30-15 shocker over Escanaba.

Over the years, Escanaba has dominated the series between the Braves and Eskymos, but that all changed as the Braves rewrote the history book on Gladstone football.

The unbeaten Braves JVs 3-0-1 lit up the scoreboard on a screen play of 39 yards from John Soderman to Elliot Vitito to take an 8-0 lead.

Gladstone made it 16-0 as Kaden Gibbs scored, and Drake Johnson caught it for the two-pointer.

Early in the final quarter, the Braves struck again. After a big defensive play by the Braves Koysta Olsen.

Gladstone took over on its own 13 yard line, and quarterback Vitito threw an 87-yard touchdown pass to a streaking Casey Alworden. Gibbs added the two-pointer again as the Craig Ness coached Braves won 24-0.

It was a total team effort for the Braves as Trenton Cartwright and Issac Ketchum spearheaded many good plays.

Brett Labre had some big runs for the Eskymos, while Colten Carter and Chase Cloutier also had big plays.

Gladstone previously defeated Calumet and Menominee while playing to a tie with Kingsford.

The Junior High Braves under coach Tom Gereau — prior to defeating Manistique 38-24 — opened its season beating Escanaba 21-7 to remain unbeaten at 2-0.

Newcomer to the Braves, Andrew Howes — a transfer from Holy Name — fit well into the program, scoring the Braves’ first touchdown.

The game remained close throughout the first half, with Gladstone leading 6-0 at the half. Two big scoring plays in the second half by Trevor Thorbahn, one a 42-yard run followed by a 50-yard scamper, led the Braves to paydirt.

The big punts by Miles Vitito kept Escanaba deep in its own territory for most of the game Cooper Sanville, Matt Hagebusch and Owen Gereau all played well for the Braves.

Braun Keagan scored Escanaba’s only touchdown.

Graham Johnson Lucas DeGrand and Lennox Peacock were in on many good plays.

Against Manistique, the junior Braves fell behind 12-0, but after a defensive adjustment, the Braves got rolling as quarterback Owen Gereau — along with Thorbahn — scored two touchdowns, with Tre Brunette also scoring.
