Braves fall to Flivvers

By Matt "Sweets" McCarthy 2 min read

KINGSFORD -- Speed and depth, Kingsford has plenty of it this season. Those two things and a stout defense are what propelled the host Flivvers past Great Northern Conference foe Gladstone, 21-6 Friday night at Flivver Field.

The Flivvers, who are senior-heavy in the 11 players who start on the offensive side of the football, are led by quarterback Michael Meneguzzo. The senior signal-caller threw for 117 yards and two touchdowns, one each to junior Nic Nora and senior Diego Przeslakowski.

After a late opening quarter score by the Flivvers off of the Meneguzzo to Nora touchdown pass, neither team crossed the goal line in the second stanza, with each team's defense bending, but not breaking in the quarter, and on through the first eight minutes of the third quarter as well.

A Flivvers fumble on the opening drive of the football game was recovered by Brett Boudreau of the Braves. On the seventh play of Gladstone's ensuing drive, the Flivvers Alaster Johnson recovered a fumble and rambled nearly 40 yards, into Braves territory, setting up Kingsford's opening touchdown.

Gladstone sophomore Nate Young stalled one of the Flivvers' early second-quarter drives, intercepting a pass.

As the Flivvers got the ball to start the third quarter, it was Gladstone who got on the scoreboard first in the stanza. The Braves drove the length of the field, after a punt pinned the visitors from Delta County at the two yard line.

Junior running back Cole Potier, who rushed for 150 yards in the contest for the Braves, carried the load, as he capped off a 98-yard drive with a 37-yard touchdown run. That ended up being the lone score for the Braves on the night.

Kingsford scored on their ensuing drive, on Meneguzzo's touchdown strike to Przeslakowski with less than two minutes remaining in the third.

The Flivvers host non-conference foe Shawano, Wis. Friday, and Gladstone hosts Menominee.
