Mid Pen finishes Big Bay in four

GARDEN CORNERS — The Mid Peninsula Wolverines enjoyed a successful night at the service line here Tuesday in a 3-1 (25-23, 23-25, 25-16, 25-10) volleyball victory over the Big Bay de Noc Black Bears.

Mid Pen collected 26 aces, including five apiece by Cora Prater, Josie Hemminger and Shae Lampinen in this season-opener.

“We did very well at the service line,” said Mid Pen coach Emily Kayser. “We’re trying to build some team chemistry. We have three new girls on the team, and they’re getting used to the roles. Landry (Koski) was very aggressive at the net. It was a great effort by our team and a great first win. It was good to get the first-match jitters out of the way.”

Koski recorded 13 kills and 12 digs in this non-conference match. Prater finished with 15 digs. Alex Haring added nine, and Shae Lampinen and Avery Croasdell had seven each. Mattie VanDamme tallied 14 assists.

Big Bay’s Alix Bleau hit five aces to go with three kills and 13 digs. Piper Jones had four kills and four blocks. Katelyn DeKeyser added 17 digs, and Ellie Nedeau had 11.

“Despite the loss, I was really proud of the way our girls played tonight,” said Big Bay coach Angie Paulson. “We’ve been fighting small numbers and an injury already this season, so for them to come out with the energy and tenacity they did in the first two sets, I can’t harp on them too much. What hurt us was poor communication and some sluggish feet in the third and fourth sets.

“I was really proud of Ellie tonight. She was fighting hard for her digs and making some great tips at the net, something we’ve been working on for the last few years. Katelyn and Alix did a great job working the floor and chasing after loose balls and Piper, as always, did a great job working at the net, too. She was strategic with her tips and had a few good blocks tonight. Overall, the potential is there, and I hope we keep building on this positive momentum.”

In the JV match, freshman Tia Nummilien served 100 percent from the line and collected 13 aces as Mid Pen beat the Black Bears 25-10, 25-2.

The Wolverines are idle until Sept. 2 when they travel to Carney-Nadeau. The Black Bears visit Mackinac Island Thursday and Friday.
