Esky minors earn playoff trip

ESCANABA — With a 17-0 win over the Norway All-Stars to clinch the Little League District 10 Championship Thursday afternoon in Escanaba, the 9-10 Escanaba minor softball All-Stars are heading downstate to compete next week.
The contest ended after three and a half innings via the mercy rule.
“(We are) excited,” said Escanaba coach John Noblet. “We’ll be representing, not only Escanaba, but the U.P., so I’m pretty excited about that. The girls are, obviously, excited about it, and we can’t wait to get this started.”
Atop the mound for Escanaba again was Emma Parlato, who went through four innings without allowing a hit and accumulating 12 strikeouts that accounted for all the outs in the game.
“She’s had 10 innings of no-hit ball,” said coach Noblet. “That’s pretty impressive, absolutely.”
Emma Parlato — in the series against Norway — has played a part in every out of the two games, 29 of 30 were strikeouts while the other was a groundball she fielded.
With 17 runs, the bats were the engine that drove Escanaba to the victory.
“That’s all we do. We try to hit the ball,” coach Noblet said. “We put the ball in play, and that’s what we want to do.”
Abby Derkos — who led several chants and cheers in the dugout — got things started for Esky with a single in the bottom of the first. Though she would be out on a fielder’s choice by shortstop Aubree LaPine, the hits kept coming for Escanaba with Kinsley Williams (single), Kallie Nummilien (two-run double), Mara Anderson (single RBI), Isabelle Noblet (fly single) and Koeller Hayes (single).
Derkos — in her second at-bat in the inning — singled to bring in Hayes for the seventh run in the inning.
While it may not have been the result Norway had been hoping for, coach Katie LaPine was still proud of the team’s effort and the fun they had.
“Like I just told the girls out there, these girls just met 14 days ago,” LaPine said. “They’re still learning each other’s strengths and weaknesses, and I am really just happy and proud they got together to do this.
“I told them it’s really not about the score; it’s about what did you learn. Everybody raised their hand, and they all said they learned something. It was new for me, it was new for some of the other coaches and we had fun.”
For the second day in a row, Norway had several great defensive moments to hold their heads high over.
Shortstop Aubree LaPine fielded several groundballs while Lilly Tomlanavich — who opened the game with a long battle of an at-bat — had a nice backhand grab at second to record the final out in the first inning.
The pitcher, catcher duo of Ava Michaud and Devynn Ross provided some excitement again with Michaud making a nice catch on an infield pop-up and Ross diving and sliding for any foul ball she could make an effort on.
For Escanaba, the win leads them downstate next week where they will begin play on July 16.
