Eskymos top Knights

NORWAY — The Escanaba Eskymos finished their regular season Tuesday night with getting some momentum on their side heading into districts as they beat the Norway Knights 5-1.

Eskymos coach Scott Hanson said the game allowed him to get some reps in for his pitching rotation for the upcoming district game against Cheboygan Saturday.

“I threw three guys (Jared Hanson, Hunter Lancour and Colin Arnt) today,” Hanson said. “We’re trying to get our guys some work heading into Cheboygan.”

Jared Hanson started on the mound for the Eskymos and threw the first three innings. He gave up two walks and zero hits while fanning eight Knights for eight of the nine outs recorded while he pitched.

Lancour pitched two and struck out and walked two. Arnt closed the game, had two strikeouts and gave up three hits for one earned run.

Hanson mentioned both Nick Kolich (2-4, 2 RBIs) and Riley Lamb (1-2, 2 RBIs, HBP) as having success batting.

“Nick Kolich had a really nice day at the plate with a double and a single, so a good day for him,” he said. “Riley Lamb had a huge RBI single. (It was) a clutch hit for him at a clutch time.

“I really like Norway, and I’m glad we were able to find (a game).”

Norway had a slew of pitchers throw in the contest with Gannon Bray, Nolan Amundson, Isaac Lorenzoni, Carson Chartier, Chase Carlson and Alex Ortman all toeing the rubber.

Michael Peterson, Carlson and Lorenzoni all notched hits for the Knights. Their only run was scored by Ian Popp who was pinch-running for Carlson. He came home on Lorenzoni’s single into right field.

Saturday, the Eskymos face the Cheboygan Chiefs with the winner heading to the district championship game later in the day.

“We’re going up there planning on playing two, but it’s baseball, and you never know how things will go,” said Hanson.

Starting at $3.50/week.
