HERMANSVILLE -- North Central's golf team hosted an invitational at Wild Pines Golf Course in Hermansville Thursday. The host Jets boys and the Stephenson girls took home the team titles.
The Jets, who accumulated a team score of 123, were led by medalist Bryson Mercier with a 34. Runner-up was Jett Starzinski of Stephenson with 39 to lead the Eagles to second place with a 141.
The Forest Park boys finished third overall with a 146, while the girls shot 187 to finish in fifth place.
Fourth place for the boys was Big Bay de Noc with a 148, and Bark River-Harris shot a fifth-place 169.
On the girls' side, the Eagles carded a 163, followed by second-place Bark River-Harris with a 165, the host Jets with a 168, and Big Bay de Noc with a 176.
Medalist for the girls was Shae Linder of Carney-Nadeau with a 46, followed by North Central's Sarah Snyder as runner-up with a 49. Hannah Larson of the Broncos shot a 50 for third place.
"Even though it was only a nine-hole meet, it was nice for the boys and girls team to have success so close to U.P. Finals," said Jets golf coach Gerald Whitens. "We are fortunate to have a great nucleus of young players that are coming into their own.
"The team of Bryson Mercier, Brady Anderson, Brent LaBonte, Mason Krumin and Dominic Naser are improving their scores every meet. Obviously, having one of the top golfers in the state (Mercier) helps."
The NC girls' roster is Sarah Snyder, her sister Katelyn Snyder, Andie Arsenault and the team is hopeful to have Sam Burton for U.P. Finals, Whitens noted.
"Sarah has led the team all year and has been a great leader and is consistently getting better every outing. We are fortunate to have a young group of dedicated golfers to build a consistent winning program at NC," Whitens said.
In extra events that were held, the Jets captured both the longest drives, with Mercier and Sarah Snyder winning that event. Mercier also won the longest putt for the boys, while Heidi Kirchner of Carney-Nadeau took the girls' longest putt award.
Stephenson won both of the closest to the pin contests, with Bryce Kuehneau and Laci Paidl winning that event.
All completing teams will return to action on Wednesday in MHSAA U.P. Finals at various locations.
