Esky girls top meet

Todd Rose | Daily Press Escanaba’s Derek Douglas winces as he nears the finish of the 800m dash Tuesday in Escanaba. Douglas won the event.

ESCANABA — The Escanaba girls won 12 events, including all four relays, more than enough to capture a triangular track meet with 101 points here Tuesday.

They were followed by Rapid River 47 and Kingsford 19.

Esky senior Anna Smith and juniors Becky Barron and Ciara Ostrenga won two individual events apiece.

Smith took high jump at four feet, 10 inches and long jump (14-4). Barron copped the 100-meter hurdles in 18.38 seconds and 300 (56.47), and Ostrenga captured the 200 (29.53) and 400 (1:03.9).

Junior Allison Korpi added a first in discus (96-2), and classmate Caitlyn Davenport won the 100 (13.75).

“Our 800 relay ran its best time all season (1:57.65), and we did a nice job in the 100 and 200,” said Esky coach Dan DeLong. “Allison had a break-out day in disc, and we took second, third and fourth in pole vault. Anna is close to going over 4-11, and Allison threw 74-1 last Friday at Manistique. Today she had over 96 feet, which is quite an improvement.”

Rapid River senior Taylor Van Oss took the 1600 (6:32) and 3200 (13:48). Classmate Morgan Anderson captured shot put (29-10 1/4), and junior Addie Christoff won pole vault (7-0).

“This was a good meet for us to get in,” said Rockets’ coach Greg Rubick. “No matter how hard you practice, you can’t match what you do in a meet. This was a good, hard workout in preparation for our (Rapid River) Invitational on Thursday.”

Senior Melanie Wenzel provided Kingsford with its lone first in the 800 (2:47.59) and helped the Flivvers take second in 1600 relay. Emma Allen took second in the 200 and 400, and Carmen Lundy was runner-up in the 1600 and 3200.

“I had eight girls competing today and they all ran hard and improved their times from the last meet (Thursday’s Niagara Invitational),” said Flivvers’ coach Lisa Harry. “I know they are learning a lot and will continue to get better with experience and meets.”

The Kingsford boys won with 69, followed by Esky 58 and Rapid River 36.

“We wanted the boys to show up and compete hard, which is what they’ve been doing,” said first-year Kingsford coach Joe Kriegl. “We have good team chemistry. We’re working on our field events. Our sprint relays were good. Only, we need to work on handoffs.

The Flivvers won nine events.

Esky senior Derek Douglas won the 800 (2:13), anchored the winning 1600 and 3200 relays and was runner-up in the 400.

“We’re happy with our 1600 and 3200 relays,” said Esky coach Scott Dykema. “Our 3200 relay dropped 20 seconds in the 3200 and nine seconds in the 1600 from last Friday. We almost had everyone back, and they were working hard. We were running the guys in four events, and they’re tired. The kids are feeling a little more confident.”

The Rockets won four field events with senior Max Lenaker taking high jump (5-8). Ben Lenaker took long jump (18-6 1/2). Junior Logan Lancour copped pole vault (9-6), and senior Parker Dausey captured discus (108-9).

Esky hosts Gladstone and Marquette in a triangular Friday. Kingsford hosts Negaunee, Ishpeming and Iron Mountain in a quadrangular Thursday.
