ESCANABA -- Hunter Eichhorn's golf career continues to glow.
The Marquette University redshirt junior has been selected Big East golfer of the year, the first time a Marquette golfer has earned that honor twice. Eichhorn, a native of Carney, was also Big East's top player as a freshman.
Eichhorn tied for medalist in the league tourney last month at Streamsong Resort in Bowling Green, Fla. but lost in a playoff for the automatic NCAA tourney berth.
This year Eichhorn averaged 71.78 in 18 rounds. He has five wins in his career and is averaging 71.55 in 104 career rounds.
He had three top-five finishes this season for the Golden Eagles and has landed an at-large berth in the NCAA Kingston Spring regional. This will be his third appearance in the NCAA tournament.
"I'm really proud of what he's accomplished," coach Steve Bailey said on the Marquette website. "Not the accolades, but his resiliency and determination throughout the process. Golf is a humbling game, and the grit Hunter has shown over the past year makes these moments rewarding.
"I love his story. He's from a town of 200 people, never had a swing coach or a formal golf lesson. He's just a kid from the U.P. who loves to compete and does it his unique way."
Eichhorn won four Upper Peninsula high school golf titles and also won the 2018 Upper Peninsula Golf Association men's championship.
