Braves’ boys tennis falls against Maroons

GLADSTONE — Menominee and Gladstone hooked up in a competitive tennis meet here Thursday as the visiting Maroons won 6-2.

“It was the second day in a row of beautiful weather for tennis,” said Braves coach Ryan Barron. “My boys played tough against Menominee today. We had three flights go three sets, including our four doubles and four singles which have a total of two matches under their belts. Those two flights easily could have gone our way. They are inexperienced but have lots of heart and determination and are extremely coachable.”

Gladstone’s Peter Noblet defeated Jason Bowers 6-2, 5-7, 6-0 in No. 2 singles and Isaac Berthaume and Zach Brazeau beat Trevor Theuerkauf and Eli Beat 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 doubles.

“I grinded one out today after yesterday’s loss,” said Noblet. “I played well.”

In No. 1 singles, Menominee’s Felipe Zamora topped Rane Castor 7-5, 6-3.

“I played really good the first set and a half,” said Castor. “Everything was working for me but my second serve. I got in my own head in the second set, and it ended up costing me the set.”

Gladstone’s Lucas Hughes came up a little short in No. 4 singles in a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 loss to Dan Burch.

“It was a lot of fun for a first meet,” said Hughes. “I know what I need to work on now, but I also know what my stronger points were, too.”

At No. 1 doubles, Sean Sailer-Carter Hedman bowed to Menominee’s Aidan Bellisle-Brady Schultz.

“It was a very frustrating loss,” said Hedman. “It’s tough playing five matches in four days, but we will bounce back.”

The Braves resume in Saturday’s Kingsford Invitational.
