Short-handed Broncos get back on track
HARRIS — This year’s Bark River-Harris track teams are a bit shorthanded, to say the least.
BR-H, which opened in Tuesday’s Delta County Invitational at Rapid River, has only nine girls and two boys.
The girls scored 28 points with their highest finish coming in the 300-meter hurdles where sophomore Hazel Conklin placed second. Junior Aspen Fredrick took third in the 200.
“It was nice to get back on the track and get the season started,” said coach Katina Demers. “Last year, we got two weeks of practice, then they shut us down. I felt bad for last year’s seniors.”
Fredrick is also entered in the sprint relays with classmate Alaska Peterson doing sprints, hurdles and long jump.
Conklin, who also does sprints, is joined by fellow sophomores KayLee Red Bear (sprints), Carley Varoni (sprint relays, middle distances and high jump) and Lillian Thompson (weight events).
“Alaska and Aspen are our all-around captains,” said Demers. “They’re very good leaders. They’re also kind and helpful. I think we’ll be pretty competitive in the sprints and strong in the hurdles. Carley is very versatile. We can probably put her in any event, and she would do very well.”
Freshmen include Julia Olson (mid distance and sprint relays), McKenzie Hoffmeyer (mid distance, high jump and long jump), Ella Boney (weight events) and Emily Linn (weight and jumping events).
“Julia did a lot of long distance in junior high,” said Demers. “She has so much potential. We’re very excited to have her on the team, and McKenzie broke our junior high long jump in seventh grade.”
Representing the boys are junior sprinter A.J. Miley, who missed the opener due to a back injury, and sophomore Wyatt Jamison in the weight events and possibly the 100.
“Wyatt is very steady and doing a great job,” said Demers. “He’ll definitely represent our school well.”
Eyanne Peterson is the Broncos’ new assistant coach.
“She’s pretty familiar with the program,” said Demers. “Eyanne has been helping out for the past 10 years. I’m excited for the rest of the season, and I think the kids are, too. As long as we’re getting on the board and improving, we’ll be doing okay.”
