Esky’s Kamin named Ms. U.P. Basketball, POTY
18 area players, Esky coach Beveridge honored

MARQUETTE — Escanaba’s Nicole Kamin enjoyed a stellar senior season and was rewarded for her efforts during the annual basketball meeting of the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association here Wednesday.
The 5-foot-11 senior was selected Ms. U.P. Basketball, Division 1-3 Player of the Year and to the All-U.P. Dream Team.
Kamin (24 points per game, nine rebounds per game, two blocks per game, 86% free throw accuracy, three assists per game) scored a career-high 45 points in Esky’s 65-48 triumph at Gladstone in a D-2 district opener and helped the Eskymos earn their first regional title in a 53-35 conquest of Ludington before dropping a 47-41 decision to eventual state champion Portland in their first quarterfinal appearance.
The Grand Valley State recruit is joined by last year’s Ms. U.P. Basketball, Menominee senior Emma Anderson, on the Dream Team which includes Calumet senior Ella Djerf, Negaunee junior Alyssa Hill and Ewen-Trout Creek senior Elise Besonen.
Mike Beveridge, who guided the Eskymos through a 15-5 season, earned Coach of the Year honors.
Gladstone’s Megan Crow (18.4 ppg, 11.1 rpg, 4.2 bpg), a 6-3 senior center, landed a first-team berth in Division 1-3.
Crow, also headed to Grand Valley, led the Braves with a career-high 36 points in the district opener.
Kamin and Crow also joined the 1,000-point club this year.
Sault Ste. Marie was Team of the Year pick in Division 1-2 with Calumet selected as the top team in D-3.
Bark River-Harris senior Allison Richer and junior Cara Zawacki, and Esky’s Carney Salo and Mari Bink, received honorable mentions.
Carney-Nadeau earned Team of the Year honors in D-4. Besonen was named Player of the Year, and Rudyard’s Carlos Molina was selected Coach of the Year.
C-N’s Tessa Wagner (23.3 ppg, 17.9 rpg, 5.3 bpg), a 6-3 junior, gained first-team honors and scored her 1,000th career point this year.
Senior teammate Taylor Kedsch (10.6 ppg) received a second-team berth. She and Wagner helped the Wolves reach the semifinals, where they fell to eventual state champion Fowler 61-37.
Also receiving second-team honors was North Central senior Andie Arsenault (20 ppg, seven rpg, three apg, 4.1 steals per game).
Wolves’ seniors Chloe Grand and Haley Ernest and sophomore Shae Linder received honorable mention as did Rapid River senior Natalie Belanger, Mid Peninsula senior Daisy Englund and junior Landry Koski, Superior Central junior Riley Johnson and Big Bay de Noc sophomore Alix Bleau and freshman Camryn Pederson.
